🔧 Express - Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery restores reliable starting and prevents random electrical glitches. On your Express, the battery sits in the engine bay and is held by a clamp/hold-down.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Most Express vans use a Group 78 battery; match your old battery’s group/terminal style.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF, remove key, and keep it in your pocket.
  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves—battery acid is corrosive.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last to prevent accidental short-circuits.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool touch the battery positive (+) and metal at the same time.
  • ⚠️ Keep flames/sparks away—batteries can vent flammable gas.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required beyond removing the cables for this job (you will be disconnecting them as part of the repair).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (inch-pound or Nm capable)
  • Battery terminal cleaning brush (specialty)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Work light
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group 78, side-terminal style) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion washers or spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal felt pads - Qty: 1 set

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to P, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and let the engine bay cool if it’s hot.
  • If you have radio presets you care about, write them down (some settings may reset).
  • Identify the terminals: negative (-) usually has a black cable; positive (+) often has a red cover.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Open the hood and locate the battery in the engine bay.
  • If there’s a protective cover, release it using a small flathead screwdriver and set it aside.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable first

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative terminal bolt.
  • Wiggle the cable off and move it aside so it can’t spring back and touch the battery.
  • Tip: Tuck the cable behind a hose.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Flip open the red terminal cover (if equipped).
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the positive terminal bolt.
  • Remove the cable and keep it from touching metal parts.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Locate the battery hold-down clamp at the base of the battery.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 6" extension, and 3/8" ratchet to remove the hold-down bolt.
  • Lift out the clamp and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use good lifting posture.
  • Set the old battery on the ground upright.

Step 6: Clean the terminals and tray

  • Use a battery terminal cleaning brush (specialty) (a brush made to scrub battery terminals) to clean corrosion off the cable ends.
  • Wipe the battery tray area clean with a dry rag you don’t mind getting dirty (avoid touching any residue).

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down clamp and bolt using a 13mm socket, extension, and ratchet.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)

  • Install anti-corrosion pads/spray (if using).
  • Reconnect the positive (+) cable using a 10mm socket and ratchet, then torque: Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the negative (-) cable using a 10mm socket and ratchet, then torque: Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall any terminal covers and the battery cover (if equipped).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Turn on headlights and blower motor to confirm stable power.
  • Check that no cables can wiggle on the terminals.
  • Reset the clock and radio presets if needed.
  • Bring the old battery to a parts store for proper recycling (most give a core credit).
