🔧 Explorer - Battery Replacement

Replacing the battery on your Explorer is a straightforward under-hood job. You’ll remove the hold-down, disconnect the cables (negative first), swap the battery, then perform the Battery Monitoring System (BMS) reset so the charging system works correctly.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours

Assumption: Your Explorer uses a Group 65 12V battery (common fitment).

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear eye protection and gloves; batteries can vent acid and hydrogen gas.
  • ⚠️ Keep sparks/flames away; do not smoke near the battery.
  • ⚠️ Always disconnect negative (-) first and reconnect it last.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a tool bridge between the battery terminal and metal body parts.
  • ⚠️ If using a “memory saver,” ensure correct polarity to avoid damage.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Torque wrench (5-30 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Trim clip tool
  • OBD-II memory saver (specialty)
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 12V battery (Group 65) - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal felt washers - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Turn everything off, remove the key fob from the vehicle area, and wait 2-3 minutes so modules go to sleep.
  • If you want to keep radio presets, you can connect an OBD-II memory saver (it supplies low current keep-alive power through the diagnostic port).
  • Open the hood and locate the battery at the front-right area of the engine bay (under/near a protective cover).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the battery

  • Remove any battery cover or air duct piece if it blocks access (use a trim clip tool for push-clips, and a 10mm socket for small bolts).
  • Set hardware aside where it won’t get lost.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative (-) cable

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative terminal clamp nut.
  • Wiggle the clamp off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Tip: Tuck the cable behind a plastic cover.
  • Torque on install: 6 Nm (53 in-lb)

Step 3: Disconnect the positive (+) cable

  • Flip open the red protective cap (if equipped).
  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the positive terminal clamp nut.
  • Lift the clamp off and position it away from the battery.
  • Torque on install: 6 Nm (53 in-lb)

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • At the base of the battery, remove the hold-down bolt using a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" extension.
  • Remove the hold-down bracket and set it aside.
  • Torque on install: 9 Nm (80 in-lb)

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Lift the battery straight up and out. Batteries are heavy—use good lifting posture.
  • If there’s corrosion (white/green powder), clean the tray area before installing the new battery.

Step 6: Clean terminals and prep the new battery

  • Use a battery terminal brush to lightly clean the inside of both cable clamps until shiny metal is visible.
  • Install battery terminal felt washers on the new battery posts (one per post).

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Place the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Reinstall the hold-down bracket and tighten the bolt with a 13mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque: 9 Nm (80 in-lb)

Step 8: Reconnect cables (positive first, negative last)

  • Install the positive (+) clamp first and tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque: 6 Nm (53 in-lb)
  • Install the negative (-) clamp last and tighten using a 10mm socket and torque wrench.
  • Torque: 6 Nm (53 in-lb)
  • Apply a light coat of battery terminal anti-corrosion spray to help prevent future corrosion.

Step 9: Reset the Battery Monitoring System (BMS)

  • The BMS helps control charging; resetting it tells the Explorer a new battery is installed.
  • Method A (no scan tool):
  • Turn ignition to ON (engine OFF), then within 10 seconds:
    • Flash the high beams 5 times.
    • Press and release the brake pedal 3 times.
    • Watch for the battery/charging indicator to blink (confirmation on many Ford clusters).
  • Method B (scan tool): Use a capable scan tool to run BMS Reset / Battery Replacement function.

Step 10: Reinstall covers

  • Reinstall any battery cover/ducting using the trim clip tool and 10mm socket as needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check that the battery warning light is off.
  • Verify headlights, wipers, and power windows work normally.
  • If you did not use a memory saver, reset the clock and radio presets.
  • Over the next 1-2 drives, the Explorer may “relearn” idle and charging behavior; this is normal after battery disconnect.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $250-$450 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $170-$280 (parts only)

You Save: $80-$170 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1.0 hours.
