🔧 Battery - Replacement

The battery on your F-150 is a straightforward swap, but you want to keep power loss controlled so modules, radio presets, and clock settings are affected as little as possible. This job is mostly removing the hold-down, disconnecting the cables in the right order, and installing the new battery securely.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Work with the engine off and key removed.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves. Battery acid can burn skin and eyes.
  • Do not let a wrench touch both battery terminals or a terminal and metal body at the same time.
  • Disconnect the negative terminal first and reconnect it last.
  • Keep sparks, flames, and smoking away from the battery.
  • If the battery is swollen, cracked, or leaking, handle it carefully and recycle it immediately.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 6-inch extension
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Battery memory saver (optional)
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal cleaning pads - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the ignition is fully off and the key is out of the truck.
  • If you use a memory saver, connect it before disconnecting the battery.
  • Have the new battery ready before you remove the old one.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the battery area

  • Open the hood and locate the battery on the engine bay side.
  • Inspect the top of the battery for corrosion, swelling, or leaks.
  • Take a quick photo of cable routing.

Step 2: Disconnect the negative cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the negative cable off the post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 3: Disconnect the positive cable

  • Use the 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the positive terminal.
  • Remove the positive cable and keep it away from the battery.

Step 4: Remove the battery hold-down

  • Use the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the battery hold-down bracket.
  • Set the bracket and fasteners aside.

Step 5: Lift out the old battery

  • Carefully lift the battery straight up and out of the tray. Batteries are heavy, so use both hands.
  • Keep it level to avoid spilling acid.

Step 6: Clean the tray and terminals

  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean corrosion from the cable ends.
  • Wipe the tray clean and check that the hold-down area is not rusted or broken.
  • Clean terminals help the new battery last longer.

Step 7: Install the new battery

  • Set the new battery into the tray in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the positive and negative posts line up with the cables.

Step 8: Reinstall the hold-down

  • Install the hold-down bracket and tighten it with the 10mm socket, 3/8-inch ratchet, and 6-inch extension.
  • Tighten snugly; do not crush the battery case.

Step 9: Reconnect the positive cable

  • Install the positive cable first and tighten it with the 10mm socket.
  • Tighten to snug plus a small turn.

Step 10: Reconnect the negative cable

  • Install the negative cable last and tighten it with the 10mm socket.
  • Make sure both terminals are secure and fully seated.

Step 11: Test the system

  • Start the truck and confirm it cranks normally.
  • Check the dash for warning lights and make sure accessories power up.

✅ After Repair

  • Reset the clock and any radio presets if needed.
  • Check that the terminals stay tight after the first drive.
  • If the battery light stays on, recheck the cable connections.
