🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

• Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
• Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the post.
• Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling the terminal clamp.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

• Pull upward evenly to release the cover’s grommets (rubber push-in mounts).
• Use a trim clip removal tool if any plastic clips are holding adjacent ducting.

Step 3: Remove the air intake ducting for access

• Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen any intake hose clamps.
• Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove bolts/clips retaining the intake snorkel/duct.
• Move the ducting aside to create clear access to the alternator and belt.

Step 4: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator

• Locate the automatic belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a hex for a wrench).
• Use a 14mm wrench on the tensioner hex and rotate to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
• Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position. Don’t let it snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connectors

• Remove the protective rubber boot from the alternator main output stud (B+).
• Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ nut and lift off the cable.
• Press the lock tab and unplug the alternator connector (field/communication plug).
• Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lbs) on the B+ nut during reassembly.

Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

• Support the alternator by hand so it doesn’t drop or bind.
• Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
• Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
• Torque to 39 N·m (29 ft-lbs) for the alternator mounting bolts during installation.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

• Set the new alternator into position and hand-start the mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 14mm socket to snug the bolts, then use a 3/8" torque wrench to finish: Torque to 39 N·m (29 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

• Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
• Install the B+ cable and nut using a 10mm socket: Torque to 9 N·m (80 in-lbs).
• Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot, then reinstall the boot over the stud.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the belt exactly as your photo shows.
• Use a 14mm wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
• Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove. One rib off can shred the belt.

Step 10: Reinstall intake ducting and engine cover

• Reinstall the air intake ducting using a 10mm socket and tighten hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver.
• Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down evenly onto the grommets.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery and verify charging

• Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench: Torque to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
• Start the engine and check for any warning lights.
• Use a digital multimeter at the battery posts: engine running should typically read about 13.8–14.7V.
