šŸ”§ Outback - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges your battery and powers your Outback’s electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it mainly involves removing the drive belt, unplugging the wiring, unbolting the alternator, then installing the new one and verifying charging voltage.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the battery negative cable before touching alternator wiring (the alternator ā€œB+ā€ cable is always hot).
  • āš ļø Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path and cooling fans.
  • āš ļø Work on a cool engine—burn risk around the radiator and exhaust.
  • āš ļø If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands on solid, level ground.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • 14mm wrench
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Digital multimeter

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if belt is worn/cracked)
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • šŸ”§ Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry/clothing that could snag.
  • šŸ”‹ Record radio presets if you care about them (battery will be disconnected).
  • 🧭 Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal (your ā€œserpentine beltā€ is the single long belt that drives multiple accessories).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
  • Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the post.
  • Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling the terminal clamp.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)

  • Pull upward evenly to release the cover’s grommets (rubber push-in mounts).
  • Use a trim clip removal tool if any plastic clips are holding adjacent ducting.

Step 3: Remove the air intake ducting for access

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen any intake hose clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove bolts/clips retaining the intake snorkel/duct.
  • Move the ducting aside to create clear access to the alternator and belt.

Step 4: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator

  • Locate the automatic belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a hex for a wrench).
  • Use a 14mm wrench on the tensioner hex and rotate to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position. Don’t let it snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connectors

  • Remove the protective rubber boot from the alternator main output stud (B+).
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ nut and lift off the cable.
  • Press the lock tab and unplug the alternator connector (field/communication plug).
  • Torque to 9 NĀ·m (80 in-lbs) on the B+ nut during reassembly.

Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator by hand so it doesn’t drop or bind.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 6" socket extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
  • Torque to 39 NĀ·m (29 ft-lbs) for the alternator mounting bolts during installation.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into position and hand-start the mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 14mm socket to snug the bolts, then use a 3/8" torque wrench to finish: Torque to 39 NĀ·m (29 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
  • Install the B+ cable and nut using a 10mm socket: Torque to 9 NĀ·m (80 in-lbs).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot, then reinstall the boot over the stud.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly as your photo shows.
  • Use a 14mm wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
  • Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove. One rib off can shred the belt.

Step 10: Reinstall intake ducting and engine cover

  • Reinstall the air intake ducting using a 10mm socket and tighten hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down evenly onto the grommets.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery and verify charging

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench: Torque to 5 NĀ·m (44 in-lbs).
  • Start the engine and check for any warning lights.
  • Use a digital multimeter at the battery posts: engine running should typically read about 13.8–14.7V.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ”Ž Listen for belt squeal or slapping; recheck belt seating if you hear noise.
  • 🧪 Recheck charging voltage after a short 10-minute drive.
  • 🧼 If the battery light comes on, recheck the alternator plug connection and the B+ nut tightness.
