🔧 Passport - Alternator Replacement

Your Passport’s alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching alternator wiring (the main cable is always “hot”).
  • Let the engine cool; you’ll be working near hot parts and the radiator fans.
  • Support the vehicle with jack stands if you go under it—never rely on a jack alone.
  • Keep tools away from the battery positive terminal and alternator B+ stud to avoid sparks.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • 12mm wrench
  • 14mm wrench
  • 3" extension (3/8" drive)
  • 6" extension (3/8" drive)
  • Universal joint adapter (3/8" drive)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry (rings can short circuits).
  • Record your serpentine belt routing (photo helps) before removing it.
  • Disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm wrench and isolate the cable so it can’t spring back.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove covers and intake ducting for access

  • Remove the engine cover (if equipped) by pulling it up firmly by hand.
  • Loosen the air intake tube clamps using a flat-blade screwdriver (or use the appropriate 10mm socket if your clamps are bolt-style).
  • Remove any intake resonator/duct bolts using a 10mm socket, then lift the ducting out of the way.
  • Take a quick photo before unplugging anything.

Step 2: Relieve tension and remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) on the belt tensioner to rotate it and release belt tension (this is a long, thin handle made to reach the tensioner safely).
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then remove it from the other pulleys.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks/glazing; if it’s worn, replace it now.

Step 3: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling it straight off.
  • Remove the protective rubber boot from the alternator B+ terminal.
  • Remove the B+ cable nut using a 12mm socket, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch metal.

Step 4: Unbolt and remove the alternator

  • Remove the alternator mounting bolts using the appropriate 12mm socket and/or 14mm socket (bolt sizes can vary by bracket position).
  • If access is tight, use a 6" extension (3/8" drive) and universal joint adapter (3/8" drive).
  • Lift the alternator out of the engine bay. If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it free—do not pry against plastic housings.

Step 5: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into place and hand-start all mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten alternator mounting bolts using a torque wrench (3/8" drive) and Torque to factory Honda specification.
  • Reconnect the B+ cable and tighten the nut using a 12mm socket and Torque to factory Honda specification, then reinstall the rubber boot.
  • Reconnect the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 6: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly as your photo shows, leaving the alternator pulley for last.
  • Rotate the tensioner again using the serpentine belt tool (specialty), slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove (misalignment will shred the belt fast).

Step 7: Reinstall intake ducting and reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten clamps using a 10mm socket (or flat-blade screwdriver for worm clamps).
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench and tighten it snugly.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the charging system warning light is off.
  • With the engine idling, check for belt noise (squeal usually means misrouted belt).
  • If you have a multimeter, check battery voltage at the terminals: typically ~13.5–14.8V running.
  • Reinitialize auto-up/down windows if needed (hold the window switch fully down, then fully up for a few seconds).
  • If idle seems rough after battery disconnect: let it idle a few minutes with all accessories off.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $650-$1,150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $250-$650 (parts only)

You Save: $400-$500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-3.0 hours.
