🔧 Altima - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. On your Altima, replacement usually involves removing the drive belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and unbolting the alternator from its bracket.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2.0-4.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring (the alternator “B+” cable is always hot).
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path and pulleys.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the exhaust and radiator area can be very hot.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses

- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect paint.
- If your Altima has auto start-stop, be prepared for a slightly longer “relearn” period after reconnecting the battery.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable and move it aside so it cannot spring back to the post.
- Tip: Wrap the terminal with a glove.
Step 2: Raise the front of the car for access
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front support points and lower the car onto them.
- Confirm stability before crawling underneath.
Step 3: Remove the lower engine cover (undertray)
- Use a trim clip remover and flathead screwdriver to remove the plastic clips.
- Use a 10mm socket for any undertray bolts.
- Set the undertray and clips aside in order.
Step 4: Relieve belt tension and remove the drive belt
- Locate the belt tensioner.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) on the tensioner hex and rotate the tensioner to release tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then remove it from the rest of the pulleys.
- Tip: Take a quick photo of belt routing.
Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab; use needle-nose pliers only if needed (don’t crush it).
- Remove the alternator output (B+) terminal nut using a 12mm socket (common size), then lift the cable off the stud.
- Reinstall the nut a few turns on the stud so it doesn’t get lost.
Step 6: Unbolt and remove the alternator
- Support the alternator by hand.
- Use a 14mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and 3/8" extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Work the alternator out of the bracket and down through the lower opening.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it free (avoid prying on aluminum).
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Position the alternator into the bracket.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten mounting bolts using a 14mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench (10–150 Nm range) to Torque to Nissan specification.
- Tip: Hand-start bolts at least 5 turns.
Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable onto the alternator stud and tighten the nut with a 12mm socket to Torque to Nissan specification.
- Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
- Confirm the cable boot covers the B+ stud fully.
Step 9: Reinstall the drive belt
- Route the belt correctly around all pulleys.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reinstall the undertray and lower the car
- Reinstall the undertray using the 10mm socket and the trim clip remover for clips.
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift slightly, remove jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the car.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal and tighten with a 10mm socket.
- Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion spray.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or rubbing.
- Check charging operation: with engine idling, system voltage should typically be in the ~13.5–14.8V range depending on load and smart charging strategy.
- Recheck that the belt is centered on each pulley after 1–2 minutes of running.
- If a warning light appears, shut down and recheck the alternator connector and B+ terminal nut tightness.
