- ā ļø Work on a cool engineāhands and tools are close to the radiator fan area.
- ā ļø Support the hood securely and keep loose clothing away from the belt path.

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool completely.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal first, then isolate it so it canāt spring back.
- Take a photo of the belt routing.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove engine covers and open access
- Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward firmly (itās held by grommets) and set it aside.
- If the intake snorkel/duct is in your way, loosen the clamps using a flathead screwdriver, then remove any clips with a trim clip remover and move the duct aside.
Step 2: Release belt tension and remove the serpentine belt
- Locate the automatic belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension (this tool is a long, thin handle made for tight spaces).
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
- If youāre reusing the belt, mark the rotation direction with a marker.
Step 3: Disconnect alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off (use a flashlight to see the lock tab clearly).
- Remove the rubber protective boot from the alternator B+ terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift the cable off and position it safely away from metal.
Step 4: Unbolt and remove the alternator
- Remove the alternator mounting bolts using a 14mm socket and 3/8" drive ratchet with a 3/8" drive extension as needed.
- Support the alternator as the last bolt comes out so it doesnāt drop or pinch wiring.
- Work the alternator out of the engine bay carefullyārotate it as needed to clear hoses and brackets.
Step 5: Install the new alternator
- Position the new alternator into place and start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the mounting bolts evenly using a 14mm socket, then final-tighten with a torque wrench to Torque to Toyota specification (refer to Toyota repair manual for your Land Cruiser).
- Reconnect the B+ cable, install the nut using a 12mm socket, then tighten with a torque wrench to Torque to Toyota specification (refer to Toyota repair manual). Refit the rubber boot.
- Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.
Step 6: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to your photo or the under-hood belt routing label.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release tension.
- Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove using a flashlight.
Step 7: Reassemble and reconnect the battery
- Reinstall any intake ducting/clamps using a flathead screwdriver and clips using a trim clip remover.
- Reinstall the engine cover by aligning the grommets and pushing down firmly.
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten with a torque wrench to Torque to Toyota specification (refer to Toyota repair manual).
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or slapping noises; shut it off immediately if you hear anything abnormal.
- With the engine idling, confirm charging is normal: headlights should not dim and the battery/charging warning light should stay off.
- Recheck belt alignment after a short 2ā3 minute idle.
- Inspect for any forgotten tools or loose connectors.
