  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Chock the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • 📸 Take a picture of the belt routing (or use the under-hood belt diagram) so the belt goes back on correctly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and access the lower engine area

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front-right jacking point, then support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the right-front wheel using a 21mm socket and breaker bar.
  • Remove the front under-cover/splash shield fasteners using a 10mm socket and trim clip remover (specialty), then lower the cover out of the way.

Step 2: Create working room up top (if needed)

  • Remove the intake duct/air snorkel clamps and bolts using a 10mm socket, then move the duct aside for better alternator access.
  • Take a quick photo before disassembly.

Step 3: Remove belt tension from the alternator

  • From the top or through the wheel well, place a 14mm wrench on the belt tensioner hex.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Confirm the negative battery cable is disconnected.
  • Unplug the alternator regulator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling the connector straight off.
  • Remove the rubber boot from the alternator B+ post, then remove the nut using a 10mm socket and take off the main battery charge cable.
  • Clean the cable ring terminal lightly with a small wire brush if it’s dirty/corroded.

Step 5: Remove the alternator

  • Support the alternator by hand.
  • Remove the alternator mounting bolts using a 14mm socket and ratchet with a 6" extension.
  • Work the alternator out of the engine bay (you may find it easiest to guide it out through the wheel well opening).

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in place and start the mounting bolts by hand (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten the alternator mounting bolts using a 14mm socket, then Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs) with a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range).

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the main B+ cable onto the alternator post and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket, then Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range).
  • Reinstall the rubber protective boot over the B+ terminal.
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the regulator connector seal, then plug the connector back in until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly per the under-hood belt diagram.
  • Use the 14mm wrench on the tensioner again, slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove (this is critical).

Step 9: Reassemble the splash shield and wheel

  • Reinstall the under-cover/splash shield using the 10mm socket and trim clip remover (specialty).
  • Reinstall the wheel. Hand-start lug nuts, then snug with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle, then Torque lug nuts to 133 Nm (98 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs range).

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Install battery terminal anti-corrosion pads if you’re using them.

✅ After Repair

  • 🔍 Start the engine and confirm the charge warning light is OFF.
  • 🔌 Use a digital multimeter at the battery: engine running should typically read about 13.5V-14.8V.
  • 👂 Listen for belt squeal or slapping; if present, shut off and re-check belt routing/seat.
  • 🧼 Recheck the B+ terminal boot is fully covering the stud (prevents accidental shorting).
