🔧 RX350 - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative terminal before touching alternator wiring (prevents short circuits).
  • ⚠️ Keep tools away from the alternator B+ terminal (it’s direct battery power).
  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; the exhaust and radiator area can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if you lift it; never rely on a jack alone.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–100 Nm range)
  • 6" socket extension (3/8" drive)
  • 12" socket extension (3/8" drive)
  • 14mm combination wrench
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Work light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if belt is worn/cracked)
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion spray - Qty: 1 (optional)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, set the parking brake, and chock a rear wheel.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is fully cool.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing sticker (or sketch the belt path). This prevents mis-routing later.
  • Plan for radio/clock reset after battery disconnect.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (–) battery terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
  • Move the cable aside so it can’t spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 2: Create access to the belt/alternator

  • If you have enough room from the top, continue to Step 3.
  • If access is tight, lift the front-right corner using a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum), support it with jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum), then remove the lower splash shield/side cover fasteners using a trim clip remover and 10mm socket.
  • More space = less frustration.

Step 3: Relieve tension and remove the drive belt

  • Put a 14mm combination wrench (or 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet) on the belt tensioner hex/bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position (don’t let it snap).
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Locate the alternator wiring at the rear of the alternator.
  • Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it off (use a flathead screwdriver gently if needed).
  • Remove the protective cap over the main power wire (B+).
  • Use a 12mm socket to remove the B+ retaining nut, then remove the cable from the stud.
  • Secure the cable so it cannot touch metal while you work.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and a 6" socket extension (3/8" drive) as needed to remove the alternator mounting bolt(s).
  • If a bolt is long/tight, switch to a 12" socket extension (3/8" drive) for better leverage.
  • Lift the alternator out of the bracket and remove it from the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator into place and hand-start all mounting bolts (use a 14mm socket by hand first).
  • Tighten the alternator mounting bolts with a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–100 Nm range) to factory specification.
  • Hand-starting prevents cross-threading.

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the B+ cable on the alternator stud and thread the nut on by hand.
  • Torque the B+ terminal nut with a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–100 Nm range) to factory specification, then reinstall the protective cap.
  • Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the drive belt

  • Route the belt exactly like your photo/diagram.
  • Use a 14mm combination wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
  • Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove (especially the alternator and crank pulleys).

Step 9: Reinstall any covers and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the splash shield/side cover using the trim clip remover and 10mm socket.
  • Raise slightly with the floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum), and lower the vehicle.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Install the negative (–) battery terminal and tighten using a 10mm socket.
  • If you have it, apply battery terminal anti-corrosion spray.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your RX350 and confirm the charging/low battery warning light is off.
  • Listen for belt squeal or rubbing; shut off immediately if you hear it and re-check belt routing.
  • Turn on headlights + rear defrost and verify the engine idle stays smooth.
  • Reset clock/radio presets if needed.
