How to Replace the Alternator on a 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 (Engine: V6 4.3L)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, safety tips, and charging checks for 2018
🔧 Alternator - Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. On your Sierra, replacement means removing the belt from the alternator, disconnecting the wiring, unbolting the unit, and installing the new one with the belt routed correctly.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring.
- The alternator area may be hot after driving. Let the engine cool first.
- The serpentine belt is under spring tension. Keep fingers clear of the tensioner path.
- Use jack stands if you need extra access from underneath.
- If equipped with a battery current sensor, do not damage the wiring at the battery cable.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- If the belt is cracked, glazed, or noisy, replace it now while access is open.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery power
- Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.
Step 2: Remove the air intake tube if needed
- If the alternator is blocked, use a flat-blade screwdriver or the correct clamp tool to loosen the intake tube clamps.
- Remove the tube for more room to reach the alternator.
Step 3: Release belt tension
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to unload the belt, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Take a photo of the belt routing first.
Step 4: Disconnect the alternator wiring
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the battery cable nut from the alternator B+ terminal.
- Unplug the electrical connector by hand or with a small flat-blade screwdriver if the tab is tight.
- Move the wires out of the way.
Step 5: Remove the alternator
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet with extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
- Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Reconnect the electrical plug and install the B+ cable nut with a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the B+ terminal nut to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
Step 7: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt exactly as it was before.
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Make sure the belt sits centered in every pulley groove.
Step 8: Reassemble and reconnect battery
- Reinstall the intake tube if it was removed.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- Tighten the battery terminal securely, but do not overtighten.
âś… After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or grinding.
- Check that the battery warning light stays off.
- Use a multimeter if available. Charging voltage should typically be about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
- Inspect the belt after a short drive to make sure it is tracking correctly.
