🔧 Compass - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery before touching alternator wiring (prevents short circuits).
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool; you’ll work near hot parts (exhaust/radiator area).
  • ⚠️ Support the Compass on jack stands; never rely on a jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the belt and pulleys; the tensioner is spring-loaded.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • 15mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 6" socket extension
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Work light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 Recommended if belt is worn

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Chock the rear wheels using wheel chocks.
  • Open the hood and note the belt routing (take a photo). This saves headaches later.
  • Plan to disconnect the battery: you’ll remove the negative cable first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp and remove it from the battery post.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 2: Raise and support the front of the Compass

  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front safely.
  • Set the vehicle down onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) at the proper support points.
  • Give the vehicle a gentle shake to confirm it’s stable before crawling under.

Step 3: Remove the lower engine splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a trim clip removal tool and flat-blade screwdriver to remove plastic push-clips.
  • Use an 8mm socket to remove any small bolts/screws holding the shield.
  • Set the shield and fasteners aside in a small pile so nothing gets lost.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs) when reinstalling.

Step 4: Release the serpentine belt tension

  • Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
  • Install the serpentine belt tool (specialty) onto the tensioner hex (commonly a 15mm drive point).
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to rest. Don’t let it snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator connector by releasing the lock tab with a flat-blade screwdriver (gentle pressure).
  • Remove the main power cable (B+) nut using a 13mm socket, then lift the cable off the stud.
  • Cover the cable end so it can’t touch metal while you work.
  • Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs) on the B+ nut during reassembly.

Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing bolts so it doesn’t drop.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and a 6" socket extension as needed to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Remove the alternator from the bracket and work it out through the available space (usually easiest from below on the Compass).

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator into the bracket and start all mounting bolts by hand (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten the mounting bolts with a 15mm socket.
  • Final-tighten using a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range): Torque to 48 Nm (35 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the main power cable onto the alternator stud and tighten with a 13mm socket: Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
  • Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks (confirm it’s fully seated).

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo (make sure ribs sit correctly in each grooved pulley).
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release tension.
  • Double-check the belt is centered on every pulley. Misalignment can shred belts fast.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and lower the vehicle

  • Reinstall the splash shield using the 8mm socket and the push-clips with the trim clip removal tool.
  • Lower the Compass from the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).

Step 11: Reconnect the battery and verify charging

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
  • Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
  • If you have a voltmeter, check charging voltage at the battery (typically ~13.5–14.8V while running).

✅ After Repair

  • Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if present, shut off and re-check belt routing and seating.
  • Check that all tools are removed from the engine bay and under the vehicle.
  • After a short test drive, recheck for any warning lights and inspect the belt alignment again.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
