🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

• Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
• Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back to the post.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting (as needed for access)

• Remove the engine cover by pulling it straight up by hand (it’s held by grommets).
• Use an 8mm socket (or flat trim tool, depending on clamp style) to loosen the intake hose clamps.
• Unclip any intake resonator/duct clips using a flat trim tool, then lift the ducting out for room.
• Set clamps back on the hose so you don’t lose them.

Step 3: Relieve belt tension and remove the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley

• Locate the belt tensioner.
• Use a serpentine belt tool (14mm) (a long handle tool that fits the tensioner bolt) to rotate the tensioner and release belt tension.
• While holding the tensioner, slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
• If you’re reusing the belt, inspect it closely for cracks/glazing and replace if questionable.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

• Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the tab and pulling it straight off (use needle-nose pliers gently if it’s stubborn).
• Remove the rubber boot covering the alternator B+ terminal.
• Use a 12mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift the cable off the stud.
• Torque to 9.4 Nm (7 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the B+ nut.

Step 5: Unbolt and remove the alternator

• Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the mounting bolts.
• Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, and extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
• Work the alternator out of the bracket and lift it out from the top (you may need to rotate it for clearance).
• Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs) on the alternator mounting bolts during reassembly.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

• Place the new alternator into the bracket and start the mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to snug bolts evenly.
• Use a torque wrench and 14mm socket: Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

• Install the B+ cable onto the stud, then use a 12mm socket to tighten the nut: Torque to 9.4 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
• Reinstall the rubber boot over the B+ terminal.
• Plug the alternator connector back in until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the belt according to the under-hood belt routing diagram.
• Use the serpentine belt tool (14mm) to rotate the tensioner again.
• Slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
• Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove (use a flashlight).

Step 9: Reinstall intake ducting and engine cover

• Reinstall the intake ducting and clamps using an 8mm socket.
• Press the engine cover back onto its grommets by hand.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

• Reinstall the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

• Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light stays off.
• Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if present, shut off and re-check belt routing and seating.
• If you have a multimeter, check charging voltage at the battery with the engine running: you should typically see about 13.5-14.8V.
