🔧 MDX - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it on your MDX involves removing the serpentine belt, disconnecting the alternator wiring, unbolting the alternator, and installing the new unit.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable before touching the alternator wiring.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers and tools clear of the serpentine belt and pulleys.
- ⚠️ Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot components.
- ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands—never rely on a jack alone.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🔋 Plan for a few resets after battery disconnect (window auto-up and idle relearn).
- 🧭 Take a quick photo of the belt routing before removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal and remove it.
- Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back to the terminal.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and access shields (as needed)
- Lift off the plastic engine cover by pulling upward firmly with your hands.
- If access is tight from above, raise the front safely using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Remove lower splash shield fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
Step 3: Release serpentine belt tension
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight).
- Install a 14mm serpentine tensioner socket on the tensioner and rotate it to relieve belt tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner back.
- Tip: Release tension slowly to avoid snapping.
Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternator control connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off (use a flat-blade screwdriver gently if the tab is stubborn).
- Remove the rubber boot on the alternator B+ terminal.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift off the cable.
- Keep the cable end from touching metal parts.
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and socket extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Remove the alternator from the engine bay, rotating it as needed to clear hoses and brackets.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Position the new alternator in place and start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Final tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 ft-lbs range):
- Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts.
Step 7: Reconnect the alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable and nut using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) for the B+ terminal nut.
- Reinstall the rubber boot over the terminal.
- Add a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal, then plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood belt diagram (or your photo).
- Rotate the tensioner again using the 14mm serpentine tensioner socket, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then release the tensioner slowly.
- Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall shields/cover and reconnect battery
- Reinstall any splash shields using the 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
- Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down into place.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
- 👂 Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if you hear it, shut off and re-check belt alignment.
- 🔌 If you have a multimeter, check charging voltage at the battery: engine running should typically be around 13.5-14.8V.
- 🪟 Reset window auto-up (if needed): raise the window fully and hold the switch up for 2 seconds.
- 🧠 Idle relearn (after battery disconnect): let the engine idle in Park with all accessories off until idle stabilizes (a few minutes), then drive normally.
