🔧 Murano - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it on your Murano mainly involves removing the drive belt, unplugging the wiring, unbolting the alternator, and installing the new one.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative terminal first to prevent a short.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools away from the alternator power stud (B+) until the battery is disconnected.
  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; the radiator fans can come on unexpectedly.
  • ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle, support it with jack stands on solid points.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Multimeter
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Socket set (8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 14mm)
  • Wrench set (10mm, 12mm, 14mm)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench (10–150 ft-lbs range)
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Shop light

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator (3.5L V6 compatible) - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended while you’re here)
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1 (small packet)

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove any rings/metal jewelry from your hands.
  • Plan to disconnect the battery: negative terminal first (black cable), positive last if needed.
  • Take a quick photo of belt routing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal and remove it from the battery post.
  • Move the cable aside so it can’t spring back onto the terminal.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and air intake ducting

  • Remove the engine cover by lifting it up (it’s held by grommets).
  • Use an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver to loosen intake hose clamps (if equipped).
  • Unclip/remove the intake duct/resonator as needed for access, using needle-nose pliers for any hose clamps.
  • Label small hoses with tape.

Step 3: Relieve drive belt tension

  • Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley). A “tensioner” keeps the belt tight automatically.
  • Install a serpentine belt tool (or a 14mm wrench if space allows) on the tensioner hex and rotate to relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
  • Remove the rubber protective boot from the alternator power stud (B+).
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ retaining nut, then remove the cable from the stud.
  • Keep the power cable from touching metal.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts (typically upper and lower).
  • If it’s tight, use a 12mm/14mm wrench where a socket won’t fit.

Step 6: Remove the alternator from the engine bay

  • Work the alternator out carefully without forcing it into hoses or wiring.
  • If you need more room, raise the front safely using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), then remove any lower splash shield clips using a trim clip removal tool.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator into place by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Tighten mounting bolts using a torque wrench: Torque to Nissan factory specification.

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Reinstall the B+ cable on the alternator stud and tighten the nut using a torque wrench: Torque to Nissan factory specification.
  • Reinstall the rubber boot over the power stud.
  • Apply a thin dab of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the metal pins), then plug the connector in until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the drive belt

  • Route the belt exactly as your under-hood belt diagram shows (or your photo).
  • Rotate the tensioner using the serpentine belt tool (specialty), then slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly and verify the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reinstall intake parts and engine cover

  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten clamps using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it back onto the grommets.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
  • Snug it firmly (do not over-tighten): Torque to Nissan factory specification.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your Murano and confirm the battery warning light turns off.
  • Use a multimeter at the battery terminals: engine running should typically read about 13.5–14.7V.
  • Listen for belt squeal and recheck belt alignment if you hear any noise.
  • Check that no wires are rubbing the belt/pulleys.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $650-$1,050 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $220-$520 (parts only)

You Save: $430-$530 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-3.0 hours.
