🔧 Alternator - Replacement

On your Beetle, the alternator sits low on the engine and is driven by the accessory belt. The job usually requires removing the belt, loosening nearby components for access, and swapping the alternator with the battery disconnected.

Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The charging system carries high current.
  • Let the engine cool fully before working near the belt and pulley area.
  • Support the vehicle securely with jack stands if you need access from below.
  • Keep hands and tools clear of the belt tensioner. It can snap back suddenly.
  • Wear eye protection.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 16mm socket
  • 18mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tensioner tool (specialty)
  • Flat screwdriver
  • Trim clip tool
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Alternator serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set
  • Electrical connector retaining clip - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench.
  • Raise the front of the vehicle if lower access is needed and support it with jack stands.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing before removal.
  • Label every fastener as you remove it.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine covers and gain access

  • Use a trim clip tool and flat screwdriver to remove the upper engine cover and any intake ducting blocking access.
  • Set the pieces aside in order so they go back the same way.

Step 2: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable away from the terminal so it cannot spring back and touch it.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tensioner tool (specialty) or a breaker bar on the tensioner to relieve belt tension.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks or glazing and replace it if worn.

Step 4: Unbolt the alternator

  • Use a 13mm socket and 16mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • If a lower splash shield blocks access, remove it with the appropriate trim clip tool and socket.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.

Step 5: Disconnect the electrical connections

  • Use a flat screwdriver to release the connector lock if equipped.
  • Remove the main charging cable and small plug from the alternator.
  • Keep the terminals clean and dry.

Step 6: Remove the alternator

  • Use both hands to lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
  • If clearance is tight, rotate it carefully and remove it from the top or bottom depending on space.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in place and start all bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 16mm socket to tighten the mounting bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) unless your replacement alternator kit specifies otherwise.

Step 8: Reconnect the wiring

  • Reconnect the main charging cable and the small electrical plug.
  • Make sure the connector clicks fully into place.
  • Use a 10mm wrench to snug the cable nut if equipped.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tensioner tool (specialty) to release the tensioner again.
  • Route the belt exactly as shown in your photo and make sure every rib sits in the pulley grooves.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and inspect belt alignment.

Step 10: Reassemble and reconnect power

  • Reinstall any covers, ducting, and splash shields using the proper sockets and trim tools.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Double-check every fastener.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth operation.
  • Check battery voltage at the terminals. You should typically see charging voltage above 13.5V with the engine running.
  • Listen for belt squeal, bearing noise, or warning lights.
  • If the battery was weak, charge it fully before judging the repair.
