🔧 Murano - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. On your Murano, replacement is mainly about safe battery disconnect, removing the drive belt, and unbolting the alternator from its bracket.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery before touching the alternator wiring (prevents short circuits).
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/clothes clear of the belt path and pulleys.
  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; exhaust and radiator parts can burn you.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 21mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Flat trim clip remover
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket head
  • Torque wrench (10–150 Nm range)
  • Battery terminal puller (optional)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Accessory belt tensioner (recommended if noisy/weak) - Qty: 1
  • Engine under cover fastener clips (as needed) - Qty: 2-8

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and note/photograph the belt routing diagram (usually on a sticker near the radiator support).
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (–) terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long handle for leverage.
  • A torque wrench tightens bolts to an exact value.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the front-right corner and remove the wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket to loosen the front-right wheel lug nuts 1 turn while on the ground.
  • Lift the front-right with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lug nuts using the 21mm socket and remove the wheel.
  • Reinstall later: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).

Step 2: Remove the splash shield/under cover for access

  • Use a flat trim clip remover and Phillips screwdriver to remove the clips/screws at the front-right splash shield area.
  • If the engine under cover blocks access, remove it using a 10mm socket and the flat trim clip remover.
  • Reinstall later: Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) for small 10mm under-cover bolts.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt from the alternator

  • From the wheel well, place the serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket head on the belt tensioner arm bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner slowly to relieve belt tension, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Let the tensioner return slowly (don’t let it snap back).
  • Take a photo of belt routing first.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Double-check the negative battery terminal is disconnected (use a 10mm socket if needed).
  • On the alternator, unplug the small electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off.
  • Remove the plastic cap on the large B+ stud, then use a 12mm socket to remove the nut and pull the charge cable off.
  • Reinstall later: Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs) on the B+ terminal nut.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator by hand so it doesn’t drop when bolts come out.
  • Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" drive ratchet, and 3/8" drive extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Work the alternator out of the bracket and guide it out through the best opening (usually down and out through the wheel well area).

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator into the bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten with a 14mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench (10–150 Nm range): Torque to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts.
  • If it won’t seat, don’t force it.

Step 7: Reconnect the wiring

  • Install the charge cable on the B+ stud and tighten with a 12mm socket: Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the plastic cap over the B+ terminal.
  • Plug in the small alternator connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to the under-hood diagram (or your photo).
  • Use the serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket head to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Visually confirm the belt is centered on every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall shields, wheel, and reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the splash shield/under cover using a 10mm socket, Phillips screwdriver, and flat trim clip remover.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-tighten lug nuts with a 21mm socket.
  • Lower the vehicle, then final-tighten: Torque to 113 Nm (83 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket: Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light turns off.
  • Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if present, re-check belt routing and that it’s fully seated on all pulleys.
  • With the engine running, check that headlights don’t dim heavily at idle (a quick real-world charging check).
  • Recheck for loose tools/fasteners and inspect for any rubbing wires near the belt.
  • If the battery light stays on, stop and recheck connections.
