🔧 GX460 - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt (the long drive belt on the front of the engine), and unbolting the alternator from its bracket.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🧯 Disconnect the battery negative terminal before touching alternator wiring.
- 🧤 Keep hands/tools clear of the cooling fan and belt path.
- 🔥 Work on a cool engine to avoid burns from hot parts.
- 🔌 Do not allow the alternator B+ terminal to touch ground (it can arc badly).
- 🧍 Use jack stands if you raise the front—never rely on a jack alone.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm battery terminal wrench to loosen the negative (–) battery clamp.
- Lift the clamp off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back to the post.
Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake duct
- Pull up to remove the engine cover (it’s held by grommets).
- Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the intake hose clamps.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8" to remove any intake resonator/duct bolts.
- Lift the intake duct out for working room.
Step 3: Make room at the front (shroud as needed)
- If access is tight, use a trim clip remover and 10mm socket to release the upper fan shroud fasteners/clips.
- Lift the upper portion of the shroud up and back slightly to improve access.
- Don’t force plastic clips—pry straight out.
Step 4: Release serpentine belt tension and remove the belt
- Put a 19mm socket on the belt tensioner arm bolt (this is the spring-loaded pulley assembly).
- Use a breaker bar 3/8" to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly let the tensioner return.
- Remove the belt completely if you’re replacing it, or position it out of the way.
Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections
- Locate the alternator connector and press the lock tab, then unplug it by hand.
- Pop off the rubber boot on the B+ terminal (main power stud).
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet 3/8" to remove the B+ terminal nut.
- Move the cable aside so it can’t touch metal.
- Torque on install: Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs)
Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove bolts.
- Use a 14mm socket, ratchet 3/8", and extensions 3/8" to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- If the alternator is stuck in the bracket, wiggle it and pull straight out (don’t pry on aluminum surfaces).
- Torque on install (mounting bolts): Torque to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs)
- Start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into the bracket in the same orientation.
- Hand-thread the mounting bolts first, then tighten with a 14mm socket.
- Use a torque wrench 3/8" to finish tightening: Torque to 43 Nm (32 ft-lbs)
Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable onto the stud and tighten with a 12mm socket to Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the rubber protective boot.
- Add a tiny dab of dielectric grease to the connector seal, then plug the connector in until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood routing diagram (or your photo).
- Use the 19mm socket and breaker bar 3/8" to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt over the last pulley (typically the alternator), then slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reassemble intake duct and covers
- Reposition the fan shroud (if moved) and secure using the trim clip remover and 10mm socket as needed.
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps with a flathead screwdriver.
- Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it onto the grommets.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery
- Clean and protect terminals if needed, then reinstall the negative (–) clamp.
- Use a 10mm battery terminal wrench to tighten it snugly.
- Apply battery terminal anti-corrosion spray.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and confirm the belt runs smoothly (no wobble, no chirping).
- 📏 If you have a multimeter, check charging voltage at the battery: engine running should typically be around 13.5–14.7V.
- 🧪 Turn on headlights and blower motor; confirm no battery/charging warning light.
- 🛠️ Recheck the alternator B+ nut and mounting bolts after a short test drive.
