  • đź§­ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • đź§± Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket (tuck the cable aside so it can’t spring back).
  • đź§° Take a quick photo of the belt routing sticker (or draw a simple sketch). The “serpentine belt” is the single belt that drives multiple pulleys.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Remove the plastic engine cover by pulling upward firmly with your hands.
  • Loosen the intake tube clamps using a Phillips screwdriver (some clamps use a 10mm head; use a 10mm socket if needed).
  • Unclip/remove the intake duct pieces to open access at the front of the engine.

Step 2: Raise the front and remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Lift the front with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and set it on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lower engine splash shield fasteners using a flat trim clip tool and a 10mm socket.

Step 3: Relieve belt tension and remove the serpentine belt

  • Locate the belt tensioner. The “tensioner” is a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight.
  • Install a 17mm socket on a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2" breaker bar and rotate the tensioner to relieve tension.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner back.
  • Remove the belt fully if you’re replacing it, or position it aside if reusing.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • On the back of the alternator, unplug the electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off.
  • Remove the protective rubber boot from the main power (B+) stud.
  • Remove the B+ nut using a 12mm socket, then lift the ring terminal off the stud.
  • Add a tiny dab of dielectric grease.

Step 5: Unbolt and remove the alternator

  • Remove the alternator mounting bolts using a 14mm socket and socket extensions (3" and 6").
  • If the alternator is tight in its bracket, wiggle it by hand and work it forward; avoid prying on plastic parts.
  • Lift the alternator out from the top or guide it out from below (whichever clears best on your A4WD layout).

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into the bracket and start all mounting bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Tighten the alternator mounting bolts using a 14mm socket, then final-tighten with a torque wrench.
  • Torque to 49-59 Nm (36-44 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts.

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the main B+ cable on the stud and tighten the nut using a 12mm socket.
  • Torque to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs) for the B+ terminal nut.
  • Reinstall the rubber boot over the B+ terminal.
  • Plug the alternator electrical connector back in until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly like your photo/diagram, leaving the alternator pulley for last.
  • Rotate the tensioner with a serpentine belt tool (specialty) and 17mm socket, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are centered in every grooved pulley.

Step 9: Reinstall splash shield and intake parts

  • Reinstall the lower splash shield using a 10mm socket and flat trim clip tool.
  • Reinstall intake ducting and tighten clamps using a Phillips screwdriver (or 10mm socket if applicable).
  • Push the engine cover back into place by hand.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Lower the SUV safely from the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).

âś… After Repair

  • 🔎 Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or slapping (both suggest misrouting).
  • 🔌 Use a digital multimeter on the battery terminals with the engine idling: you should typically see about 13.5-14.8V.
  • đź§Ş Turn on headlights and rear defrost and recheck voltage; it should stay above ~13V at idle.
  • 🛠️ Recheck for loose tools/fasteners and make sure the B+ boot is fully seated.
