🔧 Forte - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers your A4’s electrical system while the engine runs. On your Forte, replacement involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
Assumption: Stock 2.0L layout with standard serpentine-belt tensioner.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative terminal first to prevent a short at the alternator B+ cable (it is always “hot”).
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the exhaust and radiator area can burn you.
- ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you go underneath—never rely on a floor jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path; the tensioner is spring-loaded.

- Electrical contact cleaner - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Install wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- Open the hood and keep your 10mm socket ready for the battery terminal.
- If you need underside access, lift the front with a floor jack and place jack stands at the proper lift points.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal and remove it from the battery post.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
- This prevents accidental alternator shorting.
Step 2: Remove air ducting (if it blocks access)
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen hose clamps.
- Use pliers to release any spring clamps (a spring clamp is a squeeze-type clamp).
- Remove the intake snorkel/duct pieces and set them aside.
Step 3: Remove the lower splash shield (if equipped)
- Raise and support the front of the car using a floor jack and jack stands.
- Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the under-cover clips/bolts.
- Slide the shield out of the way.
Step 4: Relieve belt tension and remove the serpentine belt
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
- Install the serpentine belt tool 14mm (specialty) on the tensioner hex and rotate to relieve tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Take a quick photo of belt routing.
Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternator regulator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight out.
- Remove the rubber boot from the alternator B+ terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket (some units may use a different size) to remove the B+ nut and lift the cable off.
- Spray electrical contact cleaner on the connector if it’s dirty, and let it dry.
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal on reassembly (dielectric grease helps keep moisture out).
Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the last bolt so it doesn’t drop.
- Use a 14mm socket, ratchet 3/8", and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Work the alternator out of the bracket and remove it from the engine bay.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Place the new alternator into position and hand-start the mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench 3/8" and 14mm socket to tighten fasteners to the manufacturer specification: Torque to OEM specification.
Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable onto the alternator stud.
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 3/8" to tighten the terminal nut: Torque to OEM specification.
- Reinstall the rubber boot over the B+ terminal.
- Plug in the regulator connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the new belt using your photo as a guide, leaving the alternator pulley for last if that’s easiest.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 14mm (specialty) to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt on, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove (no “half-on” ribs).
Step 10: Reinstall covers/ducts and reconnect the battery
- Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
- Reinstall any intake ducting using a flat-blade screwdriver and pliers.
- Reconnect the battery negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
- Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals:
- Engine off: typically ~12.4-12.7V on a healthy battery.
- Engine running: typically ~13.5-14.7V if charging correctly.
- Listen for belt squeal and watch the belt for wobble (misrouting can cause noise).
- If the clock/radio reset, set them back to your preferences.
