🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Assumption: This is the standard 3.3L V6 front-engine alternator with a spring-loaded belt tensioner (common on the Cadenza).

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and open up access

• Lift off the engine cover by pulling upward firmly (no tools on most covers).
• Use a flat-blade screwdriver and/or metric socket set 8mm-19mm to loosen the intake duct clamps as needed.
• Use a trim clip remover to pop any plastic clips if an air duct/guide panel blocks access.

Step 2: (If needed) Raise the front for better access

• Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
• Use a floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum) to lift at the front jacking point.
• Set the car down onto jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum).

Step 3: Take a photo of the belt routing

• Use your phone to take a clear photo of how the belt snakes around the pulleys.
• This prevents wrong routing later.

Step 4: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator pulley

• Install a serpentine belt tool (or a long breaker bar with the correct socket) onto the belt tensioner bolt head.
• Rotate the tensioner smoothly to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
• Slowly let the tensioner return—do not let it snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

• Unplug the small alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight off (use needle-nose pliers gently if needed).
• Remove the rubber boot over the main power stud.
• Use a metric socket set 8mm-19mm to remove the nut on the main power cable, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch metal.

Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

• Use a metric socket set 8mm-19mm and 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
• If a bolt is tight, use a 1/2" drive breaker bar for initial loosening.
• Support the alternator with your free hand as the last bolt comes out.

Step 7: Remove the alternator from the engine bay

• Wiggle the alternator out carefully; rotate it to clear hoses/brackets.
• If access is tight, remove additional ducting/clips using the trim clip remover and metric socket set 8mm-19mm.

Step 8: Install the new alternator

• Position the new alternator in place and hand-thread the mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
• Use a torque wrench (10-200 Nm range) to tighten alternator mounting bolts: Torque to factory specification.
• Hand-start every bolt before tightening.

Step 9: Reconnect the wiring

• Install the main power cable onto the alternator stud and tighten with a torque wrench (10-200 Nm range): Torque to factory specification.
• Reinstall the rubber protective boot over the power stud.
• Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the belt exactly like your photo, leaving the alternator pulley (or easiest pulley) for last.
• Use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
• Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 11: Reinstall intake ducting/covers and reconnect the battery

• Reinstall any ducts/panels and tighten clamps using a flat-blade screwdriver or metric socket set 8mm-19mm.
• Reinstall the engine cover by pressing it down into place.
• Reconnect the battery: positive (if removed) first, then negative. Tighten with a metric wrench set 8mm-19mm.

✅ After Repair

• Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
• Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals:
  • Engine OFF: typically ~12.4-12.7V on a healthy battery.
  • Engine RUNNING: typically ~13.5-14.7V if charging properly.
• Listen for belt squeal; if present, re-check belt routing and seating.
• Recheck for loose tools and ensure the power cable boot is fully covering the stud.
