- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove any loose items from the engine bay.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable(s) first, then isolate them so they can’t spring back.
- A serpentine belt is the single long belt up front.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Assumption: Stock 6.2L accessory drive layout (no aftermarket brackets/winch wiring on alternator).
Step 1: Remove the intake duct (for access)
- Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps on the intake duct.
- Unclip/remove any small breather tube(s) using needle-nose pliers if clamps are present.
- Lift the duct out of the way. Use a trim clip remover if any push-clips are used on your truck.
Step 2: Take a quick belt-routing reference
- Use your phone to take a clear picture of the belt routing before removal.
- If there’s a belt-routing sticker on the fan shroud, reference it.
Step 3: Release serpentine belt tension
- Install the serpentine belt tool, 1/2" drive (specialty) (or a 1/2" drive ratchet) into the belt tensioner square hole.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to rest (don’t let it snap).
- Only remove belt from one pulley if reusing.
Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connectors
- Unplug the alternator regulator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
- Remove the rubber protective boot from the alternator main power stud (B+).
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the B+ cable nut, then lift the cable off the stud.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch metal.
- Torque note for install: Torque B+ nut to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Use a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extension as needed to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Lift the alternator out of the bracket and out of the engine bay.
- Torque note for install: Torque alternator mounting bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs)
Step 6: Compare the new alternator to the old one
- Make sure the mounting ears match and the electrical connector is the same.
- Check pulley alignment and diameter visually.
- If your old alternator has any heat shield/bracket, transfer it using the same socket you removed it with.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Set the alternator into place and start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm socket to snug the bolts evenly.
- Use a torque wrench and 15mm socket: Torque alternator mounting bolts to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Place the B+ cable onto the stud, install the nut using a 13mm socket, then torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the rubber boot fully over the B+ stud.
- Add a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the regulator connector seal, then plug it in until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt using your photo/sticker as a guide.
- Use the serpentine belt tool, 1/2" drive (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last.
- Visually verify the belt is centered in every pulley groove.
- If it’s off one rib, fix it now.
Step 10: Reinstall the intake duct
- Reinstall the duct and any breather tube(s).
- Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the hose clamps snugly.
Step 11: Reconnect the batteries
- Reconnect the negative battery cable(s) using a 10mm socket.
- Make sure the terminals are fully seated and tight.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or slapping; shut off immediately if you hear it and re-check belt alignment.
- Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals: charging voltage should typically be about 13.5–14.8V with the engine running.
- Turn on headlights and blower motor; verify voltage stays steady and no battery light appears.
- Recheck the B+ boot is fully covering the stud.
