🔧 Malibu - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges your battery and powers the car’s electrical system while the engine runs. On your Malibu, replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt (the single long belt that drives multiple accessories), then swapping the alternator and reinstalling everything.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

Assumption: stock 1.5L turbo layout; access from top and right-front wheel well.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent sparks/shorts.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the turbo/engine bay can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands before working in the wheel well.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the belt path when releasing the tensioner.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)

  • Torque wrench 1/2-inch drive (50-150 ft-lbs range)
  • Socket set 1/4-inch drive (7mm-10mm)
  • Socket set 3/8-inch drive (10mm-18mm)
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 18mm socket

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Plastic splash shield clips - Qty: 4

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and note the belt routing diagram (usually on a sticker). If it’s missing, take a clear photo of the belt path.
  • Plan to disconnect the battery: negative cable first, and keep it from touching the post.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to loosen the negative battery terminal and remove it.
  • Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
  • Reconnect torque later: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs)

Step 2: Raise the right-front corner and remove the wheel

  • Use wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the right-front jacking point and support the car with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Use a breaker bar 1/2-inch drive and 19mm socket (common lug size) to remove the wheel.
  • Reinstall torque later: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs)

Step 3: Remove the right-front splash shield

  • Use a 7mm socket and ratchet 1/4-inch drive to remove small screws.
  • Use a flat trim/panel clip tool to pop the plastic retainers out without breaking them.
  • Pull the shield back to expose the belt and alternator area.

Step 4: Relieve serpentine belt tension

  • Use a serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive (specialty) (a long handle that fits in tight spaces) with a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly let the tensioner return to rest.
  • Tip: don’t remove the belt completely unless needed.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connectors

  • From the wheel well/top access, locate the alternator’s electrical plug and the main charge cable.
  • Use a pick tool to release the locking tab on the alternator plug, then pull the connector straight off.
  • Use a 13mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the nut for the main charge cable (B+).
  • Move the cable aside and protect it from touching metal.
  • Reinstall torque later: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs)

Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket, ratchet 3/8-inch drive, and extensions 3/8-inch drive (3-inch and 6-inch) to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Remove the alternator through the wheel well opening.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into place and start the mounting bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to snug the bolts evenly.
  • Final tighten with a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive: Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs)
  • Tip: hand-start every bolt 5+ turns.

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the main charge cable and nut using a 13mm socket.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs)
  • Push the alternator electrical plug in until it clicks.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt correctly using your photo/diagram.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool 3/8-inch drive (specialty) with 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt back onto the alternator pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly and check that the belt is centered on every pulley.

Step 10: Reinstall splash shield and wheel

  • Reposition the shield and reinstall screws with a 7mm socket.
  • Reinstall push-clips using a flat trim/panel clip tool.
  • Reinstall the wheel and hand-thread lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Tighten lug nuts with a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs)

Step 11: Reconnect the battery and verify charging

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten with a torque wrench 3/8-inch drive: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs)
  • Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.

✅ After Repair

  • Listen for belt squeal; if you hear it, shut off and re-check belt alignment on every pulley.
  • With the engine running, verify charging voltage at the battery is roughly 13.5–14.8V using a multimeter (a tool that measures voltage).
  • Recheck for loose tools/fasteners and make sure the splash shield is secure (no rubbing noises while turning).
