🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the truck’s electrical system while the engine is running. On your Tacoma, replacement usually means removing the serpentine belt, disconnecting the electrical connections, and lifting the alternator out from the engine bay.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. This prevents short circuits.
  • Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from the belt drive area. The belt system can pinch.
  • Do not let the alternator B+ cable touch metal after removal.
  • Let the engine cool before working near the radiator and exhaust side of the engine bay.
  • If your Tacoma has an underhood fuse or fusible link issue, diagnose that first. A new alternator will not fix a blown charging circuit.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Short extension
  • Breaker bar or serpentine belt tool
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Jack stands

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Alternator mounting hardware - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and make sure the engine is fully off and cool.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.
  • If the belt shows cracks, glazing, or fraying, replace it now. It is easiest while the alternator is out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the terminal.

Step 2: Remove the intake duct if needed

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket to loosen the air intake clamp and remove any ducting blocking access to the alternator.
  • Unclip any air box retainers with a trim clip removal tool.
  • More space makes the job easier.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Use a breaker bar or serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension and slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Carefully release the tensioner slowly.

Step 4: Remove the alternator wiring

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the alternator B+ cable nut.
  • Remove the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight off.
  • Keep the cable insulated so it cannot short to ground.

Step 5: Unbolt the alternator

  • Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator as you remove the last bolt.
  • Torque on installation: Alternator mounting bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Remove the alternator from the engine bay

  • Lift the alternator out carefully. You may need to rotate it to clear nearby hoses and brackets.
  • If it sticks, wiggle it gently rather than forcing it.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into position by hand.
  • Install the bolts finger-tight first so the threads do not cross.
  • Use the torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect the alternator wiring

  • Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.
  • Install the B+ cable and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque on installation: B+ terminal nut to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly as it was before removal.
  • Use the breaker bar or serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner again and slip the belt over the alternator pulley.
  • Check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reinstall intake parts and reconnect battery

  • Reinstall the intake duct and clamps using the flat-blade screwdriver or 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • Tighten the battery terminal snugly, but do not overtighten.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth operation.
  • Check for battery warning lights on the dash.
  • Use a multimeter at the battery terminals with the engine running. You should typically see about 13.5-14.7 volts.
  • Listen for squealing or grinding noises. If present, recheck belt routing and pulley alignment.
