🔧 Grand Cherokee - Alternator Replacement

This repair replaces the alternator, which charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running. On your Grand Cherokee with the 5.7L V8, the alternator is mounted at the front of the engine and is driven by the serpentine belt.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring to prevent sparks or electrical damage.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before working near the belt, pulleys, or radiator fan.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers, tools, and clothing away from the serpentine belt path.
  • ⚠️ The alternator is heavy enough to drop suddenly. Support it with one hand while removing the final bolt.
  • ⚠️ Do not pry against plastic cooling system parts or electrical connectors.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8-inch drive ratchet
  • 1/2-inch drive breaker bar
  • 1/2-inch drive serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • 3/8-inch drive extension set
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb range
  • Digital multimeter
  • Battery terminal brush
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal corrosion protector - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Grand Cherokee on level ground and shift into Park.
  • Set the parking brake and remove the key from the vehicle.
  • Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
  • Take a clear photo of the serpentine belt routing before removing the belt.
  • A serpentine belt is the long rubber belt that drives accessories like the alternator, water pump, and A/C compressor.
  • A belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the belt tight.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket before starting alternator removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Put on safety glasses and work gloves.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • Use a battery terminal brush to clean the terminal if corrosion is present.
  • Always disconnect negative first.

Step 2: Remove the Upper Engine Cover

  • Grip the engine cover with both hands and pull upward to release it from its rubber mounts.
  • If a clip or cover retainer is tight, use a trim clip removal tool carefully.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.

Step 3: Note the Belt Routing

  • Use your phone to take a photo of the belt routing around the pulleys.
  • Look for the belt routing decal under the hood or near the radiator support.
  • If the decal is missing, use your photo during reassembly.
  • One wrong pulley path causes problems.

Step 4: Release Serpentine Belt Tension

  • Place the 1/2-inch drive serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar into the square drive opening on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension.
  • While holding the tensioner back, slide the belt off the alternator pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
  • Do not let the tensioner snap back.

Step 5: Remove the Serpentine Belt

  • Pull the belt out from the front of the engine by hand.
  • Inspect the belt for cracks, glazing, missing ribs, or frayed edges.
  • Replace the belt if any damage is visible.
  • New alternator, old belt is risky.

Step 6: Disconnect the Alternator Electrical Connector

  • Locate the small electrical connector on the back of the alternator.
  • Press the connector lock tab with your thumb or use a flathead screwdriver gently.
  • Pull the connector straight off the alternator.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 7: Remove the Alternator Output Cable

  • Lift the protective rubber cap from the large alternator output terminal.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the output cable nut.
  • Move the cable aside carefully.
  • Keep the nut in a safe place if the replacement alternator does not include one.
  • On reassembly, tighten the output terminal nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).

Step 8: Remove the Alternator Mounting Bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Remove the lower bolt last while holding the alternator steady.
  • If the alternator is stuck in the bracket, rock it gently by hand.
  • Do not hammer the aluminum alternator housing.

Step 9: Remove the Alternator from the Engine Bay

  • Lift the alternator out carefully through the top of the engine bay.
  • Watch the radiator hose, wiring harnesses, and fan shroud as you remove it.
  • Compare the old alternator to the new one before installation.
  • Make sure the pulley, electrical connector, mounting ears, and output stud match.

Step 10: Install the New Alternator

  • Lower the new alternator into position by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 15mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb range to tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
  • Hand-start bolts before tightening.

Step 11: Reconnect Alternator Wiring

  • Install the large output cable onto the alternator output stud.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb range to tighten the nut to Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
  • Push the rubber protective cap fully over the terminal.
  • Plug in the small electrical connector until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector to make sure it is locked.

Step 12: Reinstall the Serpentine Belt

  • Route the belt around the pulleys using your photo or the belt routing decal.
  • Leave the alternator pulley for last.
  • Use the 1/2-inch drive serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to rotate the belt tensioner clockwise.
  • Slide the belt onto the alternator pulley by hand.
  • Slowly release the tensioner.
  • Check that every belt rib sits correctly inside every pulley groove.

Step 13: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Align the engine cover with its rubber mounting points.
  • Press down firmly by hand until it seats fully.
  • Make sure no tools are left in the engine bay.

Step 14: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp snugly.
  • Apply battery terminal corrosion protector after the clamp is tight.
  • Do not overtighten the clamp.

Step 15: Test Charging Voltage

  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Use a digital multimeter set to DC volts.
  • Touch the red meter lead to the positive battery terminal and the black lead to the negative battery terminal.
  • A healthy charging reading is usually about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Turn on the headlights and blower motor, then recheck voltage.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Watch the battery warning light on the dash. It should turn off after the engine starts.
  • ✅ Listen for belt squeal, chirping, or grinding noises.
  • ✅ Recheck that the serpentine belt is centered on all pulleys.
  • ✅ If the battery was weak or dead, fully charge and test the battery after alternator replacement.
  • ✅ Some windows, clock, radio presets, or auto-up features may need to be reset after battery disconnect.
  • ✅ Drive for 10-15 minutes and confirm the battery light stays off.
