🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator on your Explorer is driven by the serpentine belt and sits low on the front of the engine. Replacement requires removing the belt, intake ducting, electrical connections, and mounting bolts, then swapping the unit and checking charging output afterward.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching alternator wiring.
  • Keep hands clear of the belt path and pulley area.
  • Use jack stands if you raise the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
  • The alternator and nearby engine parts may be hot.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • If the belt is cracked, replace it now while access is open.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery terminal.

Step 2: Remove intake ducting for access

  • Use an 8mm socket and flat-blade trim tool to remove the air intake duct and any nearby clamps or fasteners.
  • Lift the ducting out of the way for access to the front of the engine.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Route the belt photo helps a lot here.

Step 4: Disconnect the alternator wiring

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the charge cable nut from the alternator.
  • Unplug the electrical connector from the alternator.
  • Keep the cable away from metal parts.

Step 5: Remove the alternator

  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Work the alternator out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket and 15mm socket to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs) for the alternator mounting bolts.

Step 7: Reconnect the wiring

  • Reconnect the electrical connector to the alternator.
  • Install the charge cable and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs) for the charge cable nut.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Route the belt over the pulleys exactly as before.
  • Make sure the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall intake parts and battery

  • Reinstall the intake ducting with the 8mm socket.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth operation.
  • Check the battery warning light on the dash.
  • Use a multimeter at the battery terminals to verify charging voltage.
  • Normal charging should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Listen for squealing, rubbing, or bearing noise.
