🔧 K900 - Alternator Replacement

Your alternator charges the battery and powers electrical systems while the engine runs. Replacing it on your K900 involves disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt, unbolting the alternator, and reinstalling everything in the correct order.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent shorts.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the radiator and belt area can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you work from underneath.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path when releasing the tensioner.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Ratchet (3/8")
  • Socket set 8mm-19mm
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm socket
  • Extension set (3" and 6")
  • Serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs)
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1
  • Intake duct clamps (if damaged) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and remove the engine cover (it pulls upward at the corners on most trims).
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal first, then isolate it so it can’t spring back. Negative off first prevents sparks.
  • Assumption: Typical K900 3.8L access is from top plus lower splash shield; bolt torques can vary slightly by production date—follow the factory spec if it differs.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove upper covers and intake ducting

  • Remove the engine cover by pulling upward evenly by hand.
  • Loosen the air intake duct clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Unclip/remove any intake resonator fasteners using a trim clip removal tool.
  • Lift the intake duct out to create working room around the front of the engine.

Step 2: Raise the front (if needed) and remove the lower splash shield

  • Lift the front of the car using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the correct front jack point.
  • Set the vehicle on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Remove the lower engine splash shield fasteners using a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.

Step 3: Take a belt routing reference

  • Use a flashlight to find the belt routing diagram (often on a radiator support label). If it’s missing, take a clear photo before removal.
  • This belt is called a “serpentine belt” (one long belt that drives multiple pulleys).

Step 4: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator

  • Install the serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position. Don’t let it snap back.

Step 5: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off (use needle-nose pliers gently if tight).
  • Remove the alternator battery cable nut using a 12mm socket (some builds may use 10mm socket).
  • Move the cable aside so it can’t touch metal.

Step 6: Unbolt and remove the alternator

  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing bolts with a 14mm socket, ratchet (3/8"), and extensions (3" and 6").
  • Remove the upper mounting bolt(s), then the lower pivot/through bolt.
  • Work the alternator out of the bracket (you may need to rotate it to clear hoses/wiring).

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator into the bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten alternator mounting bolts using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs): Torque to 45-55 Nm (33-41 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the alternator battery cable and tighten the nut using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs): Torque to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs).
  • Plug the alternator connector back in until it clicks.
  • Confirm the cable boot covers the stud completely.

Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to your photo/diagram, leaving the easiest pulley for last (often the alternator).
  • Rotate the tensioner again using the serpentine belt tool with 14mm socket and slip the belt fully onto the last pulley.
  • Visually check the belt sits centered in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reinstall lower shield and intake parts

  • Reinstall the splash shield using a 10mm socket and trim clip removal tool.
  • Lower the vehicle from the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover by pressing down evenly.

Step 11: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Snug the clamp firmly (don’t over-tighten and crack the terminal).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or slapping noises; shut off immediately if you hear anything abnormal.
  • With the engine idling, confirm charging voltage at the battery with a multimeter if available (typically ~13.5-14.7V). A multimeter measures electrical voltage.
  • Check that no warning lights remain on (battery/charging light).
  • Recheck belt alignment after a short 5-10 minute drive.
