How to Replace the Alternator on a 2015 Subaru Outback 2.5L (FB25) (Engine: Flat 4 2.5L)
Step-by-step DIY instructions with tools, parts list, torque specs, belt routing tips, and charging voltage checks for 2015
š§ Outback - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, swapping the alternator, and then verifying charging voltage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent shorts.
- ā ļø Keep tools away from the alternator āB+ā terminal (itās direct battery power).
- ā ļø Work on a cool engine; the radiator fans can turn on unexpectedly.
- ā ļø Do not pry on the radiator or A/C lines; bend them and they can leak.

šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Assumption: Stock FB25 2.5L layout with automatic belt tensioner.
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative (ā) battery terminal clamp.
- Remove the negative cable and tuck it aside so it canāt spring back.
- Torque to 6 NĀ·m (53 in-lbs) when reinstalling.
Step 2: Remove the air ducting for access
- Use a flat trim tool to pop out any plastic clips on the front intake snorkel/duct.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any retaining bolts, then lift the ducting out.
- Use needle-nose pliers for any spring clamps you need to slide back.
Step 3: Release the serpentine belt tension
- Locate the automatic belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm).
- Place the 14mm serpentine belt tool (specialty) on the tensioner hex and rotate to relieve tension. (A belt tool is a long, thin ratchet made for tight spaces.)
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly let the tensioner return.
- Control the tensionerādonāt let it snap.
Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternatorās small connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight out (use a flat trim tool if itās stuck).
- Remove the rubber cap on the alternator B+ terminal.
- Use a 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to remove the nut and lift off the battery charge cable.
- Torque to 9 NĀ·m (80 in-lbs) when reinstalling the B+ nut.
- Apply a thin film of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the metal pin) before reconnecting.
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3/8" extensions to remove the upper mounting bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket to remove the lower mounting bolt.
- Lift the alternator up and out of the engine bay.
- Wiggle it outādonāt force hoses.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into place and hand-start both mounting bolts (use a 14mm socket by hand first to avoid cross-threading).
- Tighten both bolts with a 14mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
- Finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 45 NĀ·m (33 ft-lbs) for the alternator mounting bolts.
Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable and nut using a 12mm socket.
- Torque to 9 NĀ·m (80 in-lbs), then reinstall the rubber protective cap.
- Plug in the small alternator connector until it clicks.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt correctly around all pulleys (use the under-hood routing diagram if present).
- Use the 14mm serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt over the alternator pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly, then visually confirm the belt is centered in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall the intake ducting
- Reinstall the snorkel/ducting and clips using a flat trim tool.
- Reinstall any bolts using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 7 NĀ·m (62 in-lbs) for small 10mm ducting bolts.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Install the negative (ā) battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 6 NĀ·m (53 in-lbs).
ā After Repair
- š Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light goes out.
- Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals: charging should typically read 13.8ā14.7V at idle with minimal accessories on.
- Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if present, shut off and re-check belt routing and seating.
- Do a short 10-minute drive, then recheck that the belt is still centered.
