🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the right-front and remove the wheel

• Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to slightly loosen the right-front lug nuts.
• Lift the right-front using a floor jack and support with jack stands.
• Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm socket and take off the wheel.

Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield / fender liner section

• Use a flat trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver to remove the push clips/screws from the liner.
• Pull the liner back enough to access the belt and alternator area.

Step 3: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator

• Fit a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt (or use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) if space is tight).
• Rotate the tensioner to release tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
• Slowly release the tensioner back to its stop. Don’t let it snap back.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

• Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
• Remove the protective cap on the B+ terminal (main power stud).
• Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift the cable off and move it aside.
• Keep the cable from touching metal.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

• Support the alternator with one hand.
• Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
• Work the alternator out through the wheel well opening.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

• Position the new alternator into place through the wheel well.
• Hand-start all mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
• Tighten with a 13mm socket and finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring to the alternator

• Install the B+ cable onto the stud and tighten the nut using a 10mm socket: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
• Reinstall the protective cap over the B+ terminal.
• Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the belt according to the under-hood belt routing diagram (or match the old routing).
• Rotate the tensioner using a 15mm socket or serpentine belt tool (specialty), then slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.
• Release the tensioner slowly and check the belt is centered on every pulley.

Step 9: Reinstall fender liner and wheel

• Reposition the liner and reinstall clips/screws using the flat trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver.
• Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
• Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
• Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect battery and verify charging

• Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
• Start the engine and check voltage at the battery with a multimeter: you should typically see about 13.5–14.7V at idle.
• If voltage is low, recheck the alternator connector, B+ nut tightness, and belt seating.
