๐Ÿ”ง Focus - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it on your Focus typically involves removing the right-front wheel/splash shield for access, loosening the drive belt, swapping the alternator, then verifying charging voltage.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5โ€“3.0 hours

Assumption: 2.0L accessory drive layout with access through right wheel well.

โš ๏ธ Safety & Precautions

  • ๐Ÿงค Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent an electrical short.
  • ๐Ÿงฏ Keep metal tools away from the alternator B+ post (itโ€™s direct battery power).
  • ๐ŸงŠ Work on a cool engine; the exhaust and radiator area can burn you.
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Support the car with jack stands; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ๐Ÿ‘“ Wear safety glasses when working under the fender liner.

๐Ÿ”ง Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (pair, rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 21mm socket
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Torque wrench (10โ€“200 Nm range)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Multimeter
  • Shop light

๐Ÿ”ฉ Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Fender liner push clips - Qty: 4
  • Battery terminal protector spray - Qty: 1

๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • ๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • ๐Ÿ”‘ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Open the hood and disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Set out a shop light so you can see through the wheel well clearly.
  • A serpentine belt tool is a long handle for leverage.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the right-front and remove the wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar to slightly loosen the right-front lug nuts.
  • Lift the right-front using a floor jack and support with jack stands.
  • Remove the lug nuts with the 21mm socket and take off the wheel.

Step 2: Remove the right-front splash shield / fender liner section

  • Use a flat trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver to remove the push clips/screws from the liner.
  • Pull the liner back enough to access the belt and alternator area.

Step 3: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator

  • Fit a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt (or use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) if space is tight).
  • Rotate the tensioner to release tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner back to its stop. Donโ€™t let it snap back.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
  • Remove the protective cap on the B+ terminal (main power stud).
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift the cable off and move it aside.
  • Keep the cable from touching metal.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Work the alternator out through the wheel well opening.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator into place through the wheel well.
  • Hand-start all mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten with a 13mm socket and finish with a torque wrench: Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring to the alternator

  • Install the B+ cable onto the stud and tighten the nut using a 10mm socket: Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the protective cap over the B+ terminal.
  • Plug in the alternator electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt according to the under-hood belt routing diagram (or match the old routing).
  • Rotate the tensioner using a 15mm socket or serpentine belt tool (specialty), then slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.
  • Release the tensioner slowly and check the belt is centered on every pulley.

Step 9: Reinstall fender liner and wheel

  • Reposition the liner and reinstall clips/screws using the flat trim clip tool and flathead screwdriver.
  • Install the wheel and hand-thread the lug nuts.
  • Lower the car off the jack stands using the floor jack.
  • Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Reconnect battery and verify charging

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
  • Start the engine and check voltage at the battery with a multimeter: you should typically see about 13.5โ€“14.7V at idle.
  • If voltage is low, recheck the alternator connector, B+ nut tightness, and belt seating.

โœ… After Repair

  • ๐Ÿ”Ž Listen for belt squeal; if you hear it, shut off and re-check belt alignment.
  • ๐Ÿงช Recheck charging voltage with a multimeter after a short drive.
  • ๐Ÿงผ Apply battery terminal protector spray to reduce corrosion.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Confirm the battery/charging warning light stays off.

๐Ÿ’ฐ DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450โ€“$850 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $160โ€“$420 (parts only)

You Save: $290โ€“$430 by doing it yourself!
