🔧 Trax - Alternator Replacement

Replacing the alternator on your Trax involves disabling power, removing the serpentine belt, disconnecting the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit. On the 1.4L turbo, access can vary slightly depending on whether your Trax has Start/Stop and which charging/battery setup it uses.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching alternator wiring.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely; the turbo area can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the vehicle on jack stands if you’ll work from below.
  • ⚠️ Never pry on aluminum housings; they crack easily.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Metric socket set (8mm, 10mm, 13mm, 15mm)
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range)
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Pick tool
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator (correct amperage for your Trax) - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
  • Open the hood and verify you have the radio/security codes you may need.
  • Disconnect the battery negative cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Answer these 2 quick questions so I can give you the exact GM torque specs and the correct access path:
  • ❓ Does your Trax have Auto Start/Stop (a “A” with a circle icon on the dash, and sometimes an extra small battery)?
  • ❓ Are you planning to replace the alternator from mostly above (engine bay) or do you want the from-below method (with the vehicle lifted)?

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect battery power

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal and move it off the post.
  • Wrap the cable so it can’t spring back.

Step 2: Create access to the belt/alternator

  • Remove any top engine cover or intake ducting blocking access using a flat trim tool and 8mm/10mm socket as needed.
  • If working from below, raise the front and support with jack stands using a floor jack.

Step 3: Remove serpentine belt from the alternator

  • Install the serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner and rotate it to relieve tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Take a quick photo of belt routing.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator regulator connector by releasing the lock tab using a pick tool.
  • Remove the protective cap on the main alternator power cable.
  • Remove the B+ cable nut using the correct metric socket (commonly 13mm), then move the cable aside.

Step 5: Unbolt and remove the alternator

  • Remove the alternator mounting bolts using the correct metric socket and a 3/8" ratchet.
  • Work the alternator out through the available space (top or bottom depending on access).

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator and hand-start all mounting bolts to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten alternator mounting bolts using a torque wrench: Torque to the exact GM specification for your charging setup (I’ll provide the exact Nm/ft-lb values after your 2 answers above).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring and reinstall belt

  • Reconnect the B+ cable and tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to the exact GM specification (pending your answers).
  • Reinstall the protective cap and plug in the regulator connector until it clicks.
  • Re-route the belt, rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool, and slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.

Step 8: Restore power

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
  • If you have a multimeter, verify charging voltage at the battery with the engine running (typically around 13.5–14.8V).
  • Listen for belt squeal; if present, re-check belt routing and pulley alignment.
  • If Start/Stop is equipped, confirm the system operates normally after a short drive.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $550-$1,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $370-$550 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 2-4 hours.
