🔧 TLX - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt from the alternator pulley, unplugging the wiring, then unbolting and swapping the alternator.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

Assumption: Stock intake and factory belt routing.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching alternator wiring.
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the exhaust and radiator area can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you go underneath; never rely on a jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the belt and tensioner; it can snap back hard.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-80 ft-lbs range)
  • 1/2" drive breaker bar
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 10mm wrench
  • 14mm wrench
  • Long-handled serpentine belt tool 14mm (specialty)
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Trim clip remover
  • Flat plastic pry tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and keep the key fob away from the car.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative (−) terminal and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
  • If you need access from below, raise the front with a floor jack and support with jack stands, then place wheel chocks at the rear wheels.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the engine cover and air intake ducting

  • Pull up to remove the plastic engine cover (it’s held by rubber grommets). Use a flat plastic pry tool if it’s stuck.
  • Loosen the intake hose clamps with a Phillips screwdriver and remove the intake tube/ducting as needed for room.
  • Use a flashlight to identify the alternator and belt routing.

Step 2: Release tension and remove the serpentine belt from the alternator

  • Place a 14mm socket on a breaker bar (or use a serpentine belt tool 14mm (specialty)) on the belt tensioner bolt.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Tip: Take a quick belt-routing photo.

Step 3: Unplug alternator wiring

  • Remove the rubber boot over the alternator “B+” stud.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut holding the main power cable to the alternator.
  • Press the lock tab and unplug the alternator electrical connector (the small plug).
  • Torque note (installation): Torque B+ terminal nut to 9.8 Nm (7 ft-lbs)
  • B+ is the main power output stud.

Step 4: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Use a 12mm socket and/or 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with your free hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Torque note (installation): Torque alternator mounting bolts to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the alternator from the engine bay

  • Work the alternator out carefully, rotating it as needed to clear hoses and brackets.
  • If a plastic under-cover or splash shield blocks removal, remove the clips/bolts with a trim clip remover and 10mm socket, then lower it enough for access.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in place by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first (this prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten with a 12mm socket/14mm socket and finish with a 3/8" drive torque wrench.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
  • Install the main power cable and nut using a 10mm socket, then reinstall the rubber boot.
  • Torque to 9.8 Nm (7 ft-lbs)

Step 8: Reinstall/route the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt correctly over all pulleys.
  • Rotate the tensioner again using a 14mm socket on a breaker bar, then slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall intake parts and reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the intake ducting and tighten clamps using a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover (press down evenly).
  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light stays off.
  • Listen for belt squeal or slapping; if present, shut off and re-check belt routing and seating.
  • If you have a voltmeter, check charging at the battery: engine running should typically read about 13.5–14.8V.
  • Take a short test drive, then re-check for any loose clamps, tools left behind, or oil/belt contact.
