• Park on level ground, shift to Park, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
• Open the trunk/hood as needed and make sure you have your radio presets/passwords if applicable.
• Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (-) clamp first and isolate it so it can’t spring back.
• Take a quick photo of the belt routing (or sketch it). The serpentine belt is the single belt that drives accessories like the alternator.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the lower engine cover (if equipped)

• Raise the front of the car using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it on jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
• Remove the belly pan/undertray fasteners using a Torx T25 bit and Torx T30 bit.
• Use a trim clip removal tool for any push-clips.

Step 2: Gain access to the alternator area

• From the top of the engine bay, remove the intake ducting as needed using a flat-blade screwdriver (for hose clamps) and a Torx T25 bit (for small screws).
• If the coolant expansion tank blocks access, remove its fasteners with a 10mm socket and carefully move it aside without disconnecting hoses.
• Tip: Don’t open the coolant cap on a hot engine.

Step 3: Release the serpentine belt tension

• Place a 16mm socket with a serpentine belt tool (16mm) (specialty) (a long handled tool that safely moves the tensioner) onto the belt tensioner hex.
• Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
• Slowly let the tensioner return to rest (don’t let it snap back).
• Use a paint marker to note belt direction if you plan to reuse it (reusing is not recommended).

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

• Locate the alternator wiring at the rear of the alternator.
• Unplug the small regulator connector by releasing the lock tab with a flat-blade screwdriver (gentle pressure).
• Remove the protective cap from the main B+ terminal, then remove the nut with a 13mm socket.
• Move the cable aside so it cannot touch metal.
• Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs) for the B+ terminal nut during reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

• Support the alternator by hand.
• Remove the alternator mounting bolts using a 16mm socket, ratchet, and extensions (3", 6") as needed.
• Lift the alternator out from the top or bottom depending on your access.
• Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts during reassembly.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

• Set the new alternator into place and start the mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
• Tighten the mounting bolts with a 16mm socket, then final-tighten with a 3/8" drive torque wrench (10-100 Nm range).
• Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

• Install the main B+ cable and nut using a 13mm socket.
• Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs), then reinstall the terminal cap.
• Reconnect the small regulator plug until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the new belt according to the belt routing diagram (usually on the radiator support) or your reference photo.
• Use the serpentine belt tool (16mm) (specialty) with a 16mm socket to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt onto the last pulley (commonly the alternator).
• Visually check that the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove.
• Tip: A mis-seated belt can shred quickly.

Step 9: Reinstall removed components

• Reinstall the coolant expansion tank fasteners (if moved) using a 10mm socket.
• Reinstall intake ducting using a flat-blade screwdriver and Torx T25 bit.
• Reinstall the undertray using Torx T25 bit and Torx T30 bit.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

• Reconnect the negative (-) battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
• Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs) for the battery terminal clamp nut.

✅ After Repair

• Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light turns off.
• Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if present, shut off and re-check belt seating.
• With a multimeter (if available), check charging voltage at the battery: typically ~13.5-14.8V with engine running.
• Recheck for any loose tools, wiring not clipped, or rubbing hoses.
