🔧 Alternator - Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running. On your Ram, replacement requires belt removal, electrical connector removal, and alternator unbolting from the front of the engine.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The charging system stays live until the battery is disconnected.
- Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from the serpentine belt path.
- Use caution around the radiator fan and hot engine parts.
- Do not short the alternator B+ terminal to ground.
- Take a photo of the belt routing first.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Let the engine cool fully before starting.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
- If the belt is cracked, glazed, or noisy, replace it now.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm wrench to remove the negative battery cable from the battery.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
Step 2: Remove the intake ducting
- Use a trim clip removal tool and hand pressure to remove the air intake duct or snorkel if it blocks access.
- Set all clips and clamps aside in order.
Step 3: Release belt tension
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to unload the belt, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Sketch the belt path if needed.
Step 4: Remove the serpentine belt
- Slowly release the tensioner with the breaker bar.
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys and take it out of the engine bay.
Step 5: Disconnect the alternator wiring
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut from the main alternator power cable.
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight off.
- Move the wires out of the way so they do not get pinched.
Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
Step 7: Remove the alternator
- Work the alternator out of the bracket and lift it out from the engine bay.
- If it sticks, gently wiggle it free by hand.
Step 8: Install the new alternator
- Position the new alternator in the bracket.
- Install the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the mounting bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft-lbs).
Step 9: Reconnect the alternator wiring
- Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.
- Install the power cable with the 13mm socket and tighten the nut to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
Step 10: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt exactly as it was before.
- Use the breaker bar or serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley and then slowly release the tensioner.
Step 11: Reinstall intake parts and battery cable
- Reinstall any intake ducting removed earlier.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with the 10mm wrench.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or grinding.
- Check battery voltage with the engine running; it should typically be about 13.5-14.8 volts.
- Make sure the battery warning light is off.
- Look for loose wiring, tools, or belt misrouting before driving.
