šŸ”§ Legacy - Alternator Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running. Replacing it involves removing the drive belt, unplugging the wiring, unbolting the alternator, then reinstalling everything in reverse order.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.0-2.0 hours

Assumption: your Legacy has a single serpentine belt with an automatic tensioner.

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent a short circuit at the alternator.
  • āš ļø Let the engine cool; you’ll work near hot exhaust and coolant hoses.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path; the belt tensioner is spring-loaded.
  • āš ļø Support your body/arms securely; don’t lean on the radiator or fans.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" ratchet
  • 3/8" torque wrench
  • 6" extension (3/8")
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Serpentine belt tool 14mm (specialty)
  • Digital multimeter

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry (rings/watches can short power).
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing (or sketch it). The ā€œserpentine beltā€ is the single long belt that drives multiple accessories.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) battery terminal clamp.
  • Lift the clamp off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back onto the post.

Step 2: Remove the air intake duct (for access)

  • Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps on the intake duct.
  • Use needle-nose pliers to release any small hose clamps, if equipped.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool to pop any plastic clips holding the snorkel/ducting.
  • Lift the ducting out and set it aside.

Step 3: Release tension and remove the belt from the alternator

  • Locate the belt tensioner (a spring-loaded arm with a pulley). A ā€œtensionerā€ keeps the belt tight automatically.
  • Place a 14mm socket on the tensioner hex and rotate it to relieve belt tension.
  • While holding tension off, slide the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Tip: Move the belt off just one pulley first.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (don’t yank the wires).
  • Remove the protective rubber boot from the main power stud (this is the ā€œB+ terminal,ā€ the big battery-positive output).
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut on the B+ terminal and lift the cable off.
  • Add a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not on metal pins).

Step 5: Unbolt and remove the alternator

  • Use a 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet with a 6" extension (3/8") to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • If the alternator feels ā€œstuck,ā€ gently wiggle it out by hand—avoid prying hard on aluminum brackets.
  • Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into place and start the mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 12mm socket to snug the mounting bolts.
  • Use a 3/8" torque wrench to tighten the alternator mounting bolts to Torque to OEM spec.

Step 7: Reconnect wiring

  • Reinstall the B+ cable on the stud and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket to Torque to OEM spec.
  • Reinstall the rubber boot fully over the stud.
  • Plug the electrical connector in until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the belt

  • Route the belt correctly on all pulleys (use your photo/sketch).
  • Use a 14mm socket (or serpentine belt tool 14mm (specialty)) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt over the alternator pulley.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall the air intake duct

  • Position the ducting back in place.
  • Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten hose clamps.
  • Reinstall clips using the trim clip removal tool as needed.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall the negative battery terminal and tighten with a 10mm socket.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or slapping. Shut off immediately if you hear abnormal noises.
  • Use a digital multimeter at the battery: engine running should typically show about 13.8–14.7V.
  • Confirm the battery/charging warning light is OFF on the dash.
  • Recheck that the belt is fully seated after a short 5-minute drive.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450-$900 (parts + labor)
