The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt from the alternator pulley, unplugging the wiring, and swapping the unit.

Assumption: Stock 2.5i layout with top-access alternator.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable first to prevent electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Work on a cool engine; the radiator fans and exhaust parts can be hot.
  • ⚠️ Keep tools away from the alternator B+ terminal; it can arc if battery is connected.
  • ⚠️ If you raise the car for access, support it on jack stands; never rely on a jack.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and keep the key fob away from the car.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive (+) if needed.
  • If you need more room, remove the intake snorkel/ducting near the radiator support using a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen and remove the negative (−) battery terminal.
  • Tuck the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.

Step 2: Create working space (intake ducting)

  • Remove plastic clips with a trim clip removal tool.
  • Loosen any hose clamps with a flathead screwdriver, then lift the ducting out of the way.
  • Take a quick photo for reassembly.

Step 3: Release belt tension and remove the belt from the alternator

  • Locate the spring-loaded belt tensioner (the arm with a pulley).
  • Use a 14mm socket with a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • While holding tension off, slip the belt off the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Don’t pinch fingers between belt and pulleys.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight back (use needle-nose pliers gently only if needed).
  • Remove the rubber protective boot from the alternator B+ stud.
  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut and lift the cable off.
  • Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs) when reinstalling the B+ nut.
  • Avoid twisting the stud in the alternator.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Remove the upper mounting bolt using a 12mm socket and 3/8" ratchet.
  • Remove the lower mounting bolt using a 12mm socket and extension as needed.
  • Lift the alternator up and out of the engine bay.
  • Torque alternator mounting bolts to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs) during installation.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into place, align the bolt holes by hand.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten with a 12mm socket.
  • Use a 3/8" torque wrench to finish: Torque to 39 Nm (29 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring

  • Install the B+ cable and nut using a 10mm socket: Torque to 9.8 Nm (87 in-lbs).
  • Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal, then plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the rubber boot over the B+ terminal.

Step 8: Reinstall the belt

  • Route the belt correctly around all pulleys (match the belt path sticker if present).
  • Use a 14mm socket and breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reinstall intake ducting and reconnect the battery

  • Reinstall ducting and clips using a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver as needed.
  • Reconnect battery terminals using a 10mm socket (positive + first, negative − last).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm there are no belt squeals or wobble.
  • Use a digital multimeter at the battery posts: you should typically see about 13.8–14.7V with the engine running.
  • Turn on headlights and blower motor; voltage should remain stable (not drop near 12V).
  • Recheck that the belt is still centered on every pulley after a short test drive.
