🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running. On your F-150, replacement is a belt-driven job that requires removing the serpentine belt and a few electrical connections before the unit can come out.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The alternator has direct battery power at all times.
  • Let the engine cool fully before working near the belt and pulleys.
  • Keep hands clear of the serpentine belt path. A belt tensioner can snap back suddenly.
  • Do not short the alternator main power terminal to ground.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 8mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • 1/2-inch breaker bar
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench
  • Trim clip removal tool
  • Safety glasses
  • Gloves
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
  • If your belt is cracked or glazed, replace it now while access is open.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.

Step 2: Create working room

  • Raise the front of the truck with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands.
  • Remove the passenger-side front wheel with a lug wrench or impact wrench if needed for access.
  • Remove the inner splash shield fasteners with an 8mm socket and a trim clip removal tool.

Step 3: Release the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner and slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Take a quick belt-routing photo first.

Step 4: Disconnect the alternator wiring

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the protective cover and main B+ cable nut.
  • Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight out.
  • Keep the power cable from touching metal parts.

Step 5: Remove the alternator

  • Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
  • Work the alternator out of the engine bay carefully.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Tighten the alternator bolts with a torque wrench to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the alternator plug and install the B+ cable nut.
  • Tighten the B+ terminal nut with a 10mm socket to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 7: Reinstall the belt

  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 1/2-inch breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Route the belt back over all pulleys, making sure it sits fully in each groove.
  • Inspect the belt path one more time before releasing tension.

Step 8: Reassemble and lower the truck

  • Reinstall the splash shield with an 8mm socket and the wheel if removed.
  • Lower the truck off the jack stands.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and watch the belt for smooth operation.
  • Check battery voltage if you have a meter; charging should be in the normal charging range.
  • Listen for belt squeal, pulley noise, or warning lights.
  • Test headlights, blower motor, and accessories to confirm stable charging.
