🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator on your CX-5 charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running. Replacing it usually means disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt, unplugging the electrical connectors, and swapping the unit out from the front of the engine bay.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The alternator has constant battery power.
  • Keep hands, tools, and clothing clear of the serpentine belt and pulleys.
  • Let the engine cool down first. The belt area and exhaust side can be hot.
  • Use a jack and stands only if you need extra access from below. Never rely on the jack alone.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 8mm wrench
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch breaker bar
  • 3/8-inch torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal using an 8mm wrench.
  • If the lower splash shield blocks access, raise the front of the vehicle and support it with jack stands.
  • Work slowly around the belt tensioner.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use an 8mm wrench to loosen the negative battery cable.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting

  • Pull up the plastic engine cover by hand.
  • If the intake snorkel or upper air duct blocks access, remove the fasteners with a 10mm socket and a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Set all clips and screws aside in order.

Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt

  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or a 3/8-inch breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then remove it from the other pulleys.
  • Draw the belt path before removal.

Step 4: Disconnect the alternator wiring

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the protective cover from the main power terminal, if equipped.
  • Remove the main B+ cable nut with a 10mm socket.
  • Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the release tab and pulling it straight out.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • Work the alternator out of the bracket and lift it out of the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in the bracket.
  • Install the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Tighten the bolts with a 3/8-inch torque wrench.
  • Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs) for the mounting bolts.

Step 7: Reconnect the wiring

  • Reconnect the electrical plug until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the main power cable and nut with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs) on the main terminal nut.
  • Install the protective terminal cover, if equipped.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the new or existing belt exactly as shown on your routing diagram.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last.
  • Check that the belt is seated correctly on every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reassemble removed parts

  • Reinstall the intake ducting and any fasteners with a 10mm socket and flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Reinstall the engine cover.
  • If removed, reinstall the splash shield and lower the vehicle.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery and test

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with an 8mm wrench.
  • Start the engine and let it idle.
  • Watch the belt for smooth operation and listen for squealing or rubbing.
  • Check charging voltage if you have a multimeter. A healthy system should read about 13.5-14.8 volts at idle.

✅ After Repair

  • Verify the battery warning light stays off.
  • Turn on headlights, blower motor, and rear defrost to confirm charging performance.
  • Inspect the belt path one more time after a short test drive.
  • If the battery was weak before the repair, charge or test it before assuming the alternator solved everything.
