🔧 CX-5 - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges your battery and powers electrical systems while the engine runs. On your CX-5, replacement involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and unbolting the alternator from its bracket.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent a short.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the exhaust and radiator area can burn you.
- ⚠️ If lifting the vehicle, use jack stands on solid ground; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the belt tensioner; it’s spring-loaded.

- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 Recommended while you’re there
- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove any loose jewelry or dangling clothing.
- If you’ll work from underneath, place wheel chocks at the rear wheels, then lift with a floor jack and support with jack stands.
- Take a quick photo of the belt routing or find the routing label in the engine bay. This prevents misrouting later
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8" ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable off and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
Step 2: Remove the intake duct/air box pieces for access
- Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the hose clamp(s) on the intake duct.
- Unclip/remove any small resonator/duct pieces as needed using a trim clip remover tool.
- Move the ducting out of the way to create room near the alternator.
Step 3: Relieve belt tension and remove the serpentine belt
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley assembly).
- Use a serpentine belt removal tool (specialty) or 14mm combination wrench to rotate the tensioner and relieve tension.
- Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner back.
- If reusing the belt, note the direction of rotation before removal.
Step 4: Unplug alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight off (no yanking).
- Remove the rubber boot on the B+ power stud.
- Use a 12mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then remove the cable.
- When reinstalling, Torque to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs).
- Add a thin wipe of dielectric grease to the connector seal. Helps prevent corrosion
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove the last bolt.
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8" ratchet, and 3/8" extension set to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Carefully lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
- When reinstalling, Torque to 37-52 Nm (27-38 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into position and start all mounting bolts by hand (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a 14mm socket to snug the bolts evenly, then use a torque wrench (3/8" drive) to finish: Torque to 37-52 Nm (27-38 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable and nut using a 12mm socket, then Torque to 9-12 Nm (80-106 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the rubber boot fully over the stud.
- Reconnect the alternator plug until it clicks.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt correctly on all pulleys (use your photo/routing label).
- Use a serpentine belt removal tool (specialty) or 14mm combination wrench to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall intake ducting/air box parts
- Reposition the intake ducting.
- Use a flathead screwdriver or 8mm socket to tighten the clamp(s).
- Reinstall any clips using the trim clip remover tool as needed.
Step 10: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Make sure the clamp is snug and doesn’t rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
- Use a multimeter at the battery terminals: engine running should typically show about 13.5V–14.8V.
- Listen for belt squeal and watch the belt for wobble; shut off immediately if the belt is misrouted.
- Recheck the B+ nut area for a secure boot and no rubbing wires.
