How to Replace the Alternator on a 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue (Engine: Inline 4 2.5L)
Step-by-step instructions with tools, parts, torque specs, and safety tips for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020
🔧 Alternator - Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. On your Rogue, replacement usually means removing the engine cover, intake ducting, drive belt, and then unbolting the alternator from the front of the engine.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting. The alternator is tied directly to battery power.
- Let the engine cool fully. The belt drive area and exhaust parts can be hot.
- Keep fingers clear of the serpentine belt and pulleys. A running belt can grab clothing.
- Use jack stands if you lift the vehicle. Never rely on a jack alone.
- Do not short the alternator main cable to ground.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 10mm socket
- 12mm socket
- 14mm socket
- Ratchet
- Breaker bar
- Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
- Torque wrench
- Flat-blade trim tool
- Needle-nose pliers
- Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
- Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the steering wheel to center for easier access.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket and isolate the cable.
- If the belt is worn, replace it now. A new alternator should not go back on with a cracked belt.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect power
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Set the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.
- Do not skip this step.
Step 2: Remove the intake ducting
- Use a flat-blade trim tool and 10mm socket to remove the air intake duct and any cover pieces blocking access to the alternator.
- Loosen the air box clamps as needed and move the duct aside.
Step 3: Remove the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to release belt tension, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Note the belt routing before removal. A quick photo helps.
Step 4: Unplug the alternator
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the alternator main cable.
- Unplug the electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight out.
- Move the cable out of the way so it cannot touch metal.
Step 5: Remove the alternator
- Use a 12mm socket and 14mm socket to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Work the alternator out of the engine bay carefully. It is awkward but not heavy.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Place the new alternator in position by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the bolts evenly with a torque wrench to factory specification.
- Reconnect the alternator connector and main cable. Tighten the cable nut snugly with a 10mm socket.
Step 7: Reinstall the belt
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) to rotate the tensioner again.
- Route the belt exactly as before and make sure it sits fully in every pulley groove.
- Release the tensioner slowly.
- Check every pulley groove twice.
Step 8: Reinstall intake parts and reconnect battery
- Reinstall the intake duct and air box parts using a 10mm socket and flat-blade trim tool.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.
- Tighten the battery terminal to 5 N·m (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt noise or pulley squeal.
- Check that the battery warning light goes out.
- Measure charging voltage if you have a meter. You should see about 13.5-14.8 volts at idle.
- Inspect the belt for tracking. It should run centered on every pulley.
- If the battery was weak, let the engine run and recharge it before driving far.
