🔧 Grand Cherokee - Alternator Replacement
On your Grand Cherokee diesel, the alternator is belt-driven at the front of the engine. Replacing it involves disconnecting the batteries, removing the serpentine belt from the alternator pulley, unbolting the alternator, and swapping the electrical connections to the new unit.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🛑 Disconnect the battery(s) before touching the alternator wiring (the B+ cable is always hot).
- 🔥 Work on a cool engine; the diesel front cover area and coolant hoses can burn you.
- 🧍 Use jack stands if you lift the vehicle; never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚡ Do not short the alternator B+ terminal to ground with a tool.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator (correct amperage rating) - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 Recommended while you’re here
- Battery terminal cleaning kit - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.
- Open the hood and remove the engine cover (pull straight up with both hands).
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal first, then the positive. On your Grand Cherokee diesel, there may be a main battery and an auxiliary battery depending on equipment.
- Quick check I need from you (one thing): Look at the alternator label and tell me the output rating (example: 180A or 220A). This determines the exact factory torque specs I’ll have you use.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect battery power
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery terminal clamp(s).
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the positive terminal clamp(s) if needed for access.
- Wrap terminals so they can’t spring back.
Step 2: Create working room at the front of the engine
- Remove the intake ducting if it blocks access using an 8mm socket and a trim clip removal tool (clips vary by setup).
- If a splash shield is needed for access from below, raise the front safely using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), support with jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and remove fasteners using a 8mm socket and Torx T20 bit.
Step 3: Release serpentine belt tension
- Use a serpentine belt tool on the belt tensioner and rotate to relieve tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley only, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Take a photo of belt routing first.
Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connectors
- Unplug the alternator field connector by releasing the tab by hand; use a shop light to see the lock clearly.
- Remove the alternator B+ cable nut using the correct socket set 8mm-18mm size for your unit.
- Move the cable aside so it can’t touch metal.
Step 5: Remove alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand.
- Remove the alternator mounting bolts using an E-Torx socket (commonly E12/E14) with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extensions set (3", 6", 12").
- Lift the alternator out from the top if clearance allows; if not, lower it out from below after moving the splash shield.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Position the new alternator and start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten mounting bolts using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs). Torque to the factory spec for your alternator rating (tell me 180A vs 220A and I’ll give you the exact numbers).
Step 7: Reconnect wiring
- Install the B+ cable and nut using the correct socket set 8mm-18mm size.
- Tighten using a torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs). Torque to the factory spec for your alternator rating.
- Plug in the field connector until it clicks.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt correctly and use the serpentine belt tool to rotate the tensioner.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are fully seated in every pulley groove using a shop light.
Step 9: Reassemble removed components
- Reinstall any intake ducting using an 8mm socket and any clips with a trim clip removal tool.
- Reinstall the lower splash shield using a Torx T20 bit and 8mm socket.
- Lower the vehicle safely using a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum).
Step 10: Reconnect batteries and verify charging
- Clean terminals if needed using a battery terminal puller (specialty) and the battery terminal cleaning kit.
- Reconnect positive terminal(s) first, then negative using a 10mm socket.
- Start the engine and measure charging voltage at the battery with a multimeter; you should typically see ~13.5-14.7V with the engine running.
✅ After Repair
- 👂 Listen for belt squeal or chirping; if present, re-check belt routing and pulley alignment.
- 🔎 Check for a battery/charging warning light on the dash.
- 📏 Recheck charging voltage with a multimeter after a short drive.
- 🧼 If you replaced the belt, inspect all pulleys for wobble or rough bearings.
