🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator on your Sierra charges the battery and powers the truck while the engine is running. If it is noisy, not charging, or showing voltage issues, replacement is the fix. This job is straightforward but tight in the engine bay, so take your time and keep fingers clear of the belt path.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The charging system is always live.
  • Keep hands, tools, and clothing away from the serpentine belt and pulleys.
  • Let the engine cool before working near the belt and alternator.
  • Use a memory saver only if you know how to use it correctly.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • Ratchet
  • Breaker bar
  • Torque wrench
  • Serpentine belt tool or 15mm wrench
  • Trim clip tool
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Safety glasses

  • Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • If needed, remove the engine cover for better access.
  • Take a photo of the belt routing first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Lift the cable off the battery and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.

Step 2: Remove the engine cover and intake ducting if needed

  • If the cover blocks access, pull it upward by hand.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen any intake duct clamps in the way.
  • Remove any intake tube or resonator pieces blocking the alternator.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 15mm wrench on the belt tensioner.
  • Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
  • Do not let the belt snap back.

Step 4: Unplug the alternator

  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver if needed to release the electrical connector lock.
  • Disconnect the main power cable and the small plug from the alternator.
  • Keep the cable end away from metal parts.

Step 5: Remove the alternator bolts

  • Use a 15mm socket with ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Lift the alternator out from the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator in place by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand using a 15mm socket.
  • Tighten the alternator bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect wiring

  • Reconnect the main power cable and tighten the nut with a 13mm socket.
  • Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
  • Reconnect the small electrical connector until it clicks.

Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt back over the alternator pulley following the belt routing path.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool or 15mm wrench to release the tensioner again if needed.
  • Make sure the belt sits fully in every pulley groove.

Step 9: Reassemble removed parts

  • Reinstall any intake ducting, clips, and the engine cover.
  • Use the flat-blade screwdriver and trim clip tool as needed.

✅ After Repair

  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.
  • Start the engine and watch the belt to confirm it tracks correctly.
  • Check charging voltage if you have a meter. You want about 13.5-14.7 volts at the battery with the engine running.
  • Listen for belt squeal, grinding, or rubbing.
  • Inspect the alternator wiring for secure fitment.
