šŸ”§ Alternator - Replacement

The alternator charges your A/C battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacement involves disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt, unbolting the alternator, and swapping it in with correct routing and tightness.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours

Assumption: Factory alternator and belt routing (stock setup).

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching alternator wiring (prevents short circuits).
  • āš ļø Let the engine cool; the radiator and exhaust area can be very hot.
  • āš ļø Support the vehicle with jack stands if you work from underneath; never rely on a jack.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of the belt path when releasing the tensioner (it’s spring-loaded).

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Wheel chocks
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • 8mm socket
  • 10mm socket
  • 13mm socket
  • 15mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension set (3" and 6")
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Flat trim tool
  • Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs)
  • Small pick tool
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and take a quick photo of the belt routing sticker (or draw the routing).
  • Disconnect the battery: use an 8mm socket to remove the negative battery terminal and tuck it aside so it can’t spring back.
  • If you need under-car access, chock the rear wheels, raise the front with a floor jack, and set it on jack stands.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove any lower splash shield (if equipped)

  • Use a flat trim tool to pop out the plastic push-clips (a push-clip is a plastic fastener that ā€œsnapsā€ in).
  • Use an 8mm socket to remove any small shield bolts.
  • Set the shield and clips aside in a small pile.

Step 2: Release tension and remove the serpentine belt

  • Install a 15mm socket on the belt tensioner bolt and turn it to relieve belt tension.
  • A serpentine belt tool (specialty) is a long handled wrench made for tight belt areas; use it if a ratchet won’t fit.
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then carefully let the tensioner return.
  • Tip: Take a photo before pulling the belt out.

Step 3: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • Find the alternator’s electrical plug and press the lock tab; use a small pick tool gently if the tab is stuck.
  • Remove the main battery charge wire (B+) nut using a 10mm socket, then lift the cable off.
  • Move the wires aside so they cannot get pinched during removal.
  • Torque on install (B+ nut): 9-12 Nm (80-105 in-lbs)

Step 4: Unbolt the alternator

  • Support the alternator with one hand.
  • Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • If one bolt is tight to access, switch to a longer 3/8" extension (6") and use a flashlight to line up straight.
  • Torque on install (alternator mounting bolts): 40-50 Nm (30-37 ft-lbs)

Step 5: Remove the alternator from the engine bay

  • Wiggle the alternator out carefully; it may need to rotate slightly to clear hoses and brackets.
  • Do not pry hard against plastic parts; use controlled hand pressure.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator into position by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first (this prevents cross-threading, which is when threads get damaged).
  • Tighten mounting bolts with a 13mm socket, then finish with a torque wrench to 40-50 Nm (30-37 ft-lbs).

Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the main charge cable on the alternator stud and tighten with a 10mm socket to 9-12 Nm (80-105 in-lbs).
  • Reinstall the electrical plug until it clicks.
  • Tip: A firm ā€œclickā€ means it’s locked.

Step 8: Install the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly like your photo/diagram.
  • Use a 15mm socket (or serpentine belt tool (specialty)) to rotate the tensioner, then slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last.
  • Visually check every pulley groove: the belt ribs must sit fully in the grooves.

Step 9: Reinstall splash shield (if removed)

  • Reposition the shield and reinstall bolts with an 8mm socket.
  • Push the clips back in by hand; use a flat trim tool to seat them flush if needed.

Step 10: Reconnect the battery

  • Reconnect the negative battery terminal using an 8mm socket.
  • Make it snug; do not over-tighten the clamp.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the belt runs smoothly (no wobble, no squeal).
  • Turn on headlights and blower fan; confirm no battery/charging warning light stays on.
  • If you have a meter, check charging voltage at the battery: ~13.5 to 14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Recheck the B+ nut area for looseness after a short test drive.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $450-$950 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $180-$450 (parts only)

You Save: $270-$500 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 1.5-3.0 hours.
