🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove lower splash shield (if needed for access)

• Raise the front of your Tucson using a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
• Remove the engine under-cover/splash shield fasteners using a 10mm socket and a flat trim clip remover.
• Set the shield and clips aside in a small pile so you don’t lose them.

Step 2: Relieve serpentine belt tension

• Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded arm with a pulley).
• Install a 17mm socket on the tensioner bolt (or use a 17mm box wrench), then rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
• Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
• Tip: Move slowly—spring tension is strong.

Step 3: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

• Unplug the alternator electrical connector by pressing the lock tab; use a small flathead screwdriver gently if the tab is stubborn.
• Remove the rubber boot from the alternator B+ terminal.
• Remove the B+ terminal nut using a 12mm socket, then lift the cable off and tuck it safely aside.
• When reinstalling: Torque the B+ terminal nut to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).

Step 4: Unbolt and remove the alternator

• Support the alternator with one hand.
• Remove the alternator mounting bolts using a 14mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratchet and extensions as needed.
• Work the alternator out of the engine bay (you may need to rotate it slightly to clear nearby hoses/lines).
• On installation: Torque the alternator mounting bolts to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 5: Install the new alternator

• Position the new alternator in place by hand.
• Start all mounting bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading), then snug them with a 14mm socket.
• Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque the alternator mounting bolts to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).

Step 6: Reconnect alternator wiring

• Install the main B+ cable onto the alternator stud and tighten using a 12mm socket.
• Final tighten with a torque wrench: Torque the B+ terminal nut to 10 Nm (7 ft-lbs).
• Reinstall the rubber boot over the B+ terminal.
• Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.

Step 7: Reinstall the serpentine belt

• Route the belt according to the belt diagram (or the photo you took), leaving the alternator pulley for last.
• Use a 17mm socket or 17mm box wrench to rotate the tensioner, slip the belt onto the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
• Visually confirm the belt is centered on every pulley groove (no ribs hanging off).

Step 8: Reinstall splash shield and lower the vehicle

• Reinstall the splash shield using a 10mm socket and any clips you removed.
• Lower the vehicle safely from the jack stands using the floor jack.

Step 9: Reconnect the battery

• Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

• Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is OFF.
• Listen for belt squeal or slapping; if heard, shut off and re-check belt routing and seating.
• If you have a multimeter, check charging voltage at the battery with engine running: typically around 13.5–14.8V.
• Recheck the alternator B+ terminal boot is fully covering the stud.
