🔧 Alternator - Replacement
Replacing the alternator on your F-350 restores proper battery charging and prevents stalling, dead-battery no-starts, and low-voltage issues. The job is mostly access, removing the serpentine belt, swapping the alternator, then reconnecting wiring correctly.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
Assumption: 6.2L gasoline with a single alternator.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect both negative battery cables before touching alternator wiring (the main charge wire is always “hot” otherwise).
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the radiator, belt drive, and pulleys.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers, hair, and clothing away from the belt path and pulleys.
- ⚠️ Support the hood securely and work on level ground.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
- Alternator electrical terminal nut - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔧 Open the hood and install a fender cover.
- 🔋 Disconnect both negative battery cables using a 10mm socket, then isolate them so they can’t spring back to the terminals.
- 🧭 Locate the belt routing diagram (usually on the radiator support) or take a clear photo before removing the belt.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove any intake ducting (if equipped)
- Use a flat trim tool to release any plastic clips holding the intake snorkel/duct.
- Use an 8mm socket or flat screwdriver (whichever your clamps use) to loosen hose clamps, then lift the duct out of the way.
- Take a photo for reassembly.
Step 2: Relieve serpentine belt tension
- Install a 1/2" drive breaker bar (or serpentine belt tool (specialty)) on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
- Do not let the tensioner snap back.
Step 3: Disconnect alternator electrical connectors
- Unplug the alternator regulator connector by releasing the lock tab using a pick tool if needed.
- Remove the protective cap over the main B+ terminal (charge post).
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the B+ terminal nut, then lift the cable off and move it aside.
- Keep the nut/cap together so nothing gets lost.
Step 4: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand.
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3/8" ratchet and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Lift the alternator out of the bracket and out of the engine bay.
Step 5: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into position in the bracket.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten the mounting bolts evenly using a 13mm socket.
- Final-tighten with a torque wrench: Torque to 40 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
- If a bolt feels “gritty,” stop and re-thread.
Step 6: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the main B+ cable onto the alternator charge post.
- Install and tighten the terminal nut using a 13mm socket, then torque with a torque wrench: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall the protective cap over the B+ terminal.
- Plug in the regulator connector until it clicks.
Step 7: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt exactly per the under-hood routing diagram.
- Use the 1/2" breaker bar (or serpentine belt tool (specialty)) to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt back onto the alternator pulley.
- Release the tensioner slowly.
- Visually confirm the belt is fully seated in every pulley groove.
Step 8: Reinstall intake ducting and reconnect batteries
- Reinstall any intake ducting and tighten clamps using the same tool you removed them with.
- Reconnect both negative battery cables using a 10mm socket and snug them securely.
✅ After Repair
- 🔍 Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light stays off.
- 📏 Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals: you should typically see about 13.5–14.7 volts with the engine running.
- 👂 Listen for belt squeal; if present, re-check belt routing and pulley seating.
- 🧪 If you replaced the belt, recheck belt condition/tensioner operation after a short test drive.
