🔧 Encore - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges your battery and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unbolting the alternator, then reinstalling everything and verifying charging voltage.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative cable first to prevent a short at the alternator power stud.
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the radiator, turbo plumbing, and belt drive.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle securely if you remove the right-front wheel—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers and tools clear of the belt and pulleys; the tensioner is spring-loaded.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 (recommended while you’re in there)
- Belt tensioner - Qty: 1 (optional if noisy/weak)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and install a fender cover to protect paint.
- Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative cable first, then isolate it so it can’t spring back.
- Take a quick photo of belt routing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the intake ducting for access
- Remove the engine cover (pull upward by hand if equipped).
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to loosen the intake hose clamps.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any intake/airbox bolts (if present), then lift the ducting/airbox pieces out of the way.
Step 2: Raise the right-front (if needed for access)
- Place wheel chocks at the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the right-front jack point.
- Set the vehicle onto jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Use a 19mm socket (from your socket set) to remove the right-front wheel if it improves access.
Step 3: Remove the right-front splash shield (if equipped)
- Use a trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket to remove the fasteners holding the lower/side splash shield.
- Pull the shield back to expose the belt drive area.
Step 4: Release the serpentine belt tension
- Locate the belt tensioner (a spring-loaded arm that keeps the belt tight).
- Install a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm socket on the tensioner hex.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve belt tension, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner back to its resting position.
Step 5: Disconnect alternator wiring
- Unplug the alternator electrical connector by depressing the lock tab and pulling straight off.
- Remove the rubber boot from the alternator B+ power stud.
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the nut from the B+ stud, then lift the cable off.
- Torque (reinstall): Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs) on the B+ stud nut. Do not overtighten; stud can break.
Step 6: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand.
- Use an E12 external Torx socket and/or E14 external Torx socket (some builds vary) with a 3/8" ratchet and extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Remove the alternator from the bracket (you may need to rotate it to clear hoses/wiring).
- Torque (reinstall): Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs) for alternator mounting bolts.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into position and start all mounting bolts by hand (prevents cross-threading).
- Use the E12/E14 external Torx socket to tighten the bolts evenly.
- Finish with a torque wrench 3/8": Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect wiring
- Install the main power cable onto the B+ stud.
- Use a 13mm socket to install the nut: Torque to 15 Nm (11 ft-lbs), then reinstall the rubber boot.
- Plug in the alternator connector until it clicks.
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood routing diagram (or your photo).
- Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 15mm socket to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley.
- Double-check the belt is seated in every pulley groove before releasing the tensioner.
Step 10: Reinstall splash shield, wheel, and intake parts
- Reinstall the splash shield using the trim clip removal tool and 10mm socket.
- Reinstall the wheel using your socket set, lower the vehicle, then torque lug nuts with a torque wrench: Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
- Reinstall intake ducting/airbox using a 10mm socket and tighten clamps with a flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque (if using torque wrench): Torque to 17 Nm (13 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or rubbing.
- Use a multimeter at the battery terminals: charging voltage should typically read about 13.8–14.7V with the engine running.
- Turn on headlights and rear defrost; voltage should remain stable (minor drop is normal).
- Recheck the belt alignment after a short test drive.
- Assumption: Mounting fasteners are E12/E14 on most Encores; use the one that fits snugly.
