🔧 Flex - Alternator Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while your Flex is running. Replacing it involves disconnecting the battery, removing the serpentine belt, unbolting the alternator, and swapping the electrical connections to the new unit.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-3.0 hours
Assumption: 3.5L NA layout with alternator accessible from the top/front.
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent a short at the alternator B+ terminal (it is always “hot” if the battery is connected).
- ⚠️ Let the engine cool before working near the radiator, exhaust, or belt drive.
- ⚠️ Keep fingers/tools clear of the belt path; the tensioner is spring-loaded (it snaps back hard).
- ⚠️ If you raise the vehicle for access, support it with jack stands on solid ground.

🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Alternator - Qty: 1
- Serpentine belt - Qty: 1 (recommended if belt is cracked or glazed)
- Battery terminal anti-corrosion pads - Qty: 2 (optional)
📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and keep the key fob away from the vehicle.
- Take a photo of the belt routing sticker (usually on the radiator support). If there’s no sticker, draw a quick belt diagram.
- If you plan to replace the belt, have the new belt ready and compare its length/rib count to the old one.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative (-) battery terminal and remove it from the post.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs) when reinstalling the negative terminal.
Step 2: Remove the air intake duct (if it blocks access)
- Use an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps at the air box and throttle body.
- Unclip/remove the duct and set it aside.
- More space now saves scraped knuckles later.
Step 3: Relieve serpentine belt tension
- Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley).
- Install a 15mm socket on a 3/8" breaker bar and rotate the tensioner to release belt tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly let the tensioner return.
- Spring-loaded means “let it back slowly.”
Step 4: Unplug alternator electrical connections
- Find the alternator electrical connector and press the lock tab, then pull it straight off.
- Remove the protective rubber boot on the alternator B+ stud (main power wire).
- Use a 13mm socket to remove the B+ nut and lift the cable off the stud.
- Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs) when reinstalling the B+ nut.
Step 5: Remove alternator mounting bolts
- Support the alternator with one hand as you remove bolts (it’s heavier than it looks).
- Use a 13mm socket with a 3" extension and 3/8" ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Remove the alternator from the bracket and guide it up and out of the engine bay.
- Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the alternator mounting bolts.
Step 6: Install the new alternator
- Compare the old and new alternator: pulley alignment, electrical plug, and mounting ears should match.
- Position the alternator into the bracket and start all mounting bolts by hand (prevents cross-threading).
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten: Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Install the B+ cable onto the alternator stud.
- Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten: Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the rubber boot over the B+ terminal.
- Plug the alternator connector back in until it clicks.
Step 8: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood diagram (or your photo).
- Use a 15mm socket on a 3/8" breaker bar to rotate the tensioner and slip the belt onto the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
- Visually confirm the belt ribs are seated in every pulley groove.
Step 9: Reinstall the intake duct and reconnect the battery
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps using an 8mm socket or flathead screwdriver.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 7 Nm (62 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
- Use a digital multimeter at the battery terminals:
- Engine off: about 12.4–12.7V (healthy battery).
- Engine running: typically 13.5–14.8V (alternator charging).
- Listen for belt squeal and watch the belt for smooth tracking (no wobble).
- Recheck the B+ boot is fully covering the terminal.
