🔧 Alternator - Replacement

The alternator on your RAV4 keeps the battery charged and powers the electrical system while the engine runs. Replacing it means removing the drive belt, disconnecting the electrical connections, and swapping the unit out from the front of the engine bay.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable before touching the alternator wiring.
  • The alternator is connected to the main charging wire, which can arc if left energized.
  • Keep hands clear of the belt drive area. The serpentine belt can pinch hard.
  • Work only on a cool engine. Hot exhaust parts sit close to this area.
  • If your RAV4 has an under-engine cover, support it before removing fasteners.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm wrench
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 17mm wrench
  • Ratchet
  • Long breaker bar
  • Serpentine belt tool (specialty)
  • Torque wrench
  • Flat trim tool
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)
  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine belt - Qty: 1
  • Alternator mounting bolts - Qty: 1 set

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Make sure the ignition is OFF and the key is away from the vehicle.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable first using a 10mm wrench.
  • If the belt is cracked, shiny, or noisy, replace it while you are in there.
  • Take a quick belt routing photo first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the negative battery terminal.
  • Move the cable aside so it cannot spring back and touch the post.

Step 2: Remove the engine under cover

  • Raise the front of the vehicle with a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) and support it with jack stands.
  • Use a 10mm socket and flat trim tool to remove the under cover fasteners.
  • Set the cover aside safely.

Step 3: Release belt tension

  • Locate the serpentine belt tensioner at the front of the engine.
  • Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 17mm wrench to rotate the tensioner and relieve belt tension.
  • Slip the belt off the alternator pulley and slowly release the tensioner.
  • Do not let the tool snap back.

Step 4: Remove the alternator electrical connections

  • Use a 10mm socket to remove the battery cable nut on the alternator.
  • Lift the cable off and secure it so it cannot touch metal.
  • Unplug the alternator connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling straight back.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Use a 14mm socket and ratchet to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
  • Support the alternator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Lift the alternator out through the top of the engine bay.

Step 6: Install the new alternator

  • Set the new alternator in place and start all mounting bolts by hand.
  • Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts.
  • Torque to 44 Nm (33 ft-lbs)
  • Reconnect the alternator electrical connector.
  • Install the battery cable and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket.
  • Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs)

Step 7: Reinstall the serpentine belt

  • Route the belt exactly as it was before.
  • Use the serpentine belt tool (specialty) or 17mm wrench to rotate the tensioner again.
  • Slip the belt fully onto the alternator pulley and confirm it sits in every groove.
  • Double-check belt alignment.

Step 8: Reinstall the under cover and reconnect battery

  • Reinstall the lower engine cover with a 10mm socket and trim tool.
  • Lower the vehicle off the jack stands.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm wrench.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and confirm the battery warning light goes out.
  • Listen for belt squeal or pulley noise.
  • Check alternator output with a voltmeter if available. Normal charging is typically about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
  • Inspect the belt tracking after a short test drive.
