🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Lift the cable off the battery post and tuck it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Negative cable comes off first.
Step 2: Raise and Secure the Front of the Vehicle
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Use a floor jack 2-ton minimum to raise the front of your Altima at the proper front jacking point.
- Place jack stands 2-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands and lightly shake the vehicle to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Right Front Lower Splash Shield
- Use a trim clip remover to remove the plastic push clips from the lower splash shield.
- Use a 10mm socket to remove any lower shield bolts.
- Move the shield out of the way to access the belt and lower alternator area.
- A splash shield is the plastic panel that blocks water and road debris from the engine bay.
Step 4: Relieve Serpentine Belt Tension
- Locate the automatic belt tensioner on the front of the engine.
- The belt tensioner is a spring-loaded pulley that keeps the serpentine belt tight.
- Use a serpentine belt tool 14mm adapter (specialty) or 14mm socket with a long ratchet on the tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner slowly to release belt tension.
- Slip the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Remove the belt from the remaining pulleys.
- Do not let the tensioner snap back.
Step 5: Disconnect Alternator Electrical Connectors
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to gently release the locking tab on the alternator electrical connector.
- Pull the connector straight off. Do not pull on the wires.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket as equipped to remove the nut from the alternator battery cable terminal.
- Move the cable away from the alternator and keep the protective boot nearby.
Step 6: Remove Alternator Mounting Bolts
- Use a 14mm socket, 3/8-inch drive ratchet, and 3/8-inch drive extension 6-inch to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator with one hand as the final bolt comes out.
- If a bolt is tight, use a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar carefully to break it loose.
- Note bolt positions if the lengths are different.
Step 7: Remove the Alternator
- Work the alternator out of its bracket by hand.
- If it is stuck in the bracket, gently wiggle it side to side. Do not pry against the aluminum housing forcefully.
- Guide the alternator out through the available space from the lower/right side access area.
- Slow movement prevents damaged wiring.
Step 8: Compare the Old and New Alternator
- Set both alternators side by side on a clean surface.
- Check that the mounting ears, pulley grooves, electrical plug, and battery cable stud are in the same positions.
- Use a digital multimeter only after installation for charging checks, not for comparing the parts physically.
Step 9: Install the New Alternator
- Guide the new alternator into the mounting bracket by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
- Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft-lbs) unless the replacement alternator instructions specify otherwise.
Step 10: Reconnect Alternator Wiring
- Push the alternator electrical connector in until it clicks.
- Place the battery cable ring terminal onto the alternator output stud.
- Use a 10mm socket or 12mm socket and torque wrench 10-100 ft-lb to tighten the output terminal nut.
- Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Reinstall the rubber protective boot over the terminal.
Step 11: Install the Serpentine Belt
- Route the new serpentine belt around the pulleys using your photo as a guide.
- Leave the alternator pulley for last because it is easy to reach.
- Use the serpentine belt tool 14mm adapter (specialty) or 14mm socket to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt over the alternator pulley, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Check that the belt ribs sit fully inside every pulley groove.
- Misrouted belts fail very quickly.
Step 12: Reinstall the Lower Splash Shield
- Position the splash shield back into place.
- Use a trim clip remover to help align the plastic clips if needed.
- Push the clips in by hand until seated.
- Use a 10mm socket to reinstall any shield bolts.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) for small splash shield bolts.
Step 13: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack 2-ton minimum to raise the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands 2-ton minimum.
- Lower your Altima slowly to the ground.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket to tighten the clamp nut.
- Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Apply battery terminal protectant after the cable is tight.
