🔧 Veloster - Alternator Replacement

The alternator keeps your battery charged and powers the car while the engine is running. Replacing it means disconnecting the battery, removing the drive belt, unplugging the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit.

Assumption: Stock alternator on your Veloster 1.6T; access is from the top with the intake duct/airbox removed (some cars benefit from removing the lower splash shield too).

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the battery negative terminal first to prevent a short (the alternator B+ cable is always “hot”).
  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool; the turbo/heat shields get extremely hot.
  • ⚠️ Support the car with jack stands if you go underneath; never rely on a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Keep fingers/clothes clear of the belt path and pulleys.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Floor jack (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Jack stands (rated 2-ton minimum)
  • Wheel chocks
  • 10mm socket
  • 12mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive long extension (6"-10")
  • 3/8" drive swivel/universal joint
  • Serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench
  • Torque wrench (10-150 ft-lbs)
  • Flat trim clip tool
  • Pick tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Alternator (1.6L turbo) - Qty: 1
  • Serpentine drive belt - Qty: 1 Recommended if belt is worn
  • Electrical contact cleaner - Qty: 1
  • Dielectric grease - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, put the transmission in 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
  • Open the hood and keep the key/fob away from the car.
  • Disconnect the battery: use a 10mm socket to remove the negative terminal first, then the positive if needed.
  • Take a quick photo of the belt routing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the intake duct and airbox (access space)

  • Use a flat trim clip tool to remove any plastic push-clips holding the intake snorkel/duct.
  • Loosen the intake hose clamp(s) using a 10mm socket.
  • Unclip and lift out the airbox top/filter if equipped; then remove the lower airbox if it blocks access (use 10mm socket for bolts).
  • Set parts aside so you can clearly see the alternator and belt area.

Step 2: (Optional) Remove the lower splash shield for better access

  • Raise the front safely with a floor jack and support with jack stands; use wheel chocks at the rear.
  • Use a flat trim clip tool and 10mm socket to remove the undertray fasteners.
  • Lower access makes it easier to guide the alternator out.

Step 3: Release belt tension and remove the drive belt

  • Locate the belt tensioner (spring-loaded pulley arm).
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench on the tensioner hex to rotate it and relieve belt tension. (A serpentine belt tool is a thin, long handle made for tight spaces.)
  • Slide the belt off the alternator pulley first, then slowly release the tensioner.
  • If reusing the belt, keep it clean and note the routing.

Step 4: Disconnect alternator electrical connections

  • On the back of the alternator, unplug the small connector by lifting the lock tab with a pick tool (gentle—plastic gets brittle).
  • Remove the main charging cable (B+) nut using a 12mm socket, then lift the cable off.
  • Spray terminals with electrical contact cleaner and let them dry.

Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts

  • Support the alternator with one hand so it doesn’t drop suddenly.
  • Use a 14mm socket, ratchet, and a long extension to remove the alternator mounting bolts (typically upper and lower).
  • If a bolt is hard to reach, use a swivel/universal joint to angle the socket.

Step 6: Remove the alternator from the engine bay

  • Wiggle the alternator free from the bracket.
  • Rotate it as needed and lift it out from the top; if it won’t clear, guide it down and out through the lower opening (this is where removing the undertray helps).
  • Don’t pry on the radiator or A/C lines.

Step 7: Install the new alternator

  • Position the new alternator in the bracket by hand.
  • Start all mounting bolts by hand first (prevents cross-threading).
  • Tighten bolts using a 14mm socket, then use a torque wrench: Torque to 45-55 Nm (33-41 ft-lbs).

Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring

  • Install the main B+ cable and tighten with a 12mm socket: Torque to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in-lbs).
  • Apply a thin film of dielectric grease to the connector seal (not the metal pin), then plug in the small connector until it clicks.
  • Reinstall the protective rubber boot over the B+ terminal.

Step 9: Reinstall the drive belt

  • Route the belt correctly around all pulleys (use your photo as reference).
  • Use a serpentine belt tool or 14mm box wrench to rotate the tensioner again and slip the belt over the alternator pulley last.
  • Slowly release the tensioner and visually confirm the belt is centered in every pulley groove.

Step 10: Reassemble intake/undertray and reconnect battery

  • Reinstall the airbox and intake duct using a 10mm socket and reinstall clips with a flat trim clip tool.
  • If removed, reinstall the undertray using a 10mm socket and clips.
  • Reconnect the battery: positive first (if removed), then negative using a 10mm socket.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or rubbing.
  • With the engine idling, verify charging voltage at the battery is roughly 13.8–14.6V (a basic multimeter check).
  • Turn on headlights and blower fan; voltage should stay stable and the battery light should remain off.
  • Recheck for loose tools/fasteners and inspect the belt tracking again after a short test drive.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
