🔧 Alternator - Replacement
The alternator charges the battery and powers the electrical system while the engine is running. On your Equinox, replacement means removing the drive belt, disconnecting the alternator wiring, and swapping the unit out from the front of the engine.
Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 2-4 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting. The alternator has constant battery power at the main terminal.
- Let the engine cool fully before touching the belt drive area. Hot pulleys and nearby exhaust parts can burn you.
- Keep hands clear of the belt tensioner. It is spring-loaded and can snap back quickly.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves.

- Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.
- If any intake duct or cover blocks access, remove it first with a 10mm socket or flat-blade trim tool.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect power
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the negative battery cable.
- Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the terminal.
Step 2: Remove access components
- Use a 10mm socket and flat-blade trim tool to remove any air duct, inlet tube, or cover blocking the alternator.
- Set all clips and fasteners aside in order.
- Take a quick photo before removal.
Step 3: Release the serpentine belt
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar on the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to unload belt tension, then slip the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Slowly release the tensioner.
Step 4: Remove the belt from the alternator
- Pull the belt clear of the alternator pulley by hand.
- If the belt is cracked, glazed, or noisy, replace it now.
Step 5: Disconnect alternator wiring
- Use a 10mm socket to remove the nut from the main battery cable on the alternator.
- Unplug the smaller electrical connector by pressing the lock tab and pulling it straight out.
- Keep the cable end from touching metal.
Step 6: Remove the alternator
- Use a 15mm socket with extensions to remove the alternator mounting bolts.
- Support the alternator as the last bolt comes out.
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
- Torque on installation: 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs) for the alternator mounting bolts.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator in place by hand.
- Start all mounting bolts by hand first using a 15mm socket.
- Tighten the bolts evenly.
- Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Reconnect the wiring
- Reconnect the smaller electrical connector until it clicks.
- Install the main battery cable and tighten the nut with a 10mm socket.
- Torque to 13 Nm (115 in-lbs).
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Check the belt routing diagram under the hood.
- Use a serpentine belt tool (specialty) or breaker bar to rotate the tensioner again.
- Slip the belt onto the alternator pulley last, then slowly release the tensioner.
- Make sure the belt is seated fully in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reinstall access parts and reconnect the battery
- Reinstall any intake duct or cover with a 10mm socket and trim tool.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal with a 10mm socket.
- Snug the battery clamp. Do not overtighten.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and listen for belt squeal or rubbing.
- Check that the battery warning light goes out.
- If you have a multimeter, charging voltage should usually be about 13.5-14.8 volts with the engine running.
- Inspect the belt again after a short drive.
