📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Open the hood and remove the key from the vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm wrench and move it aside so it can’t spring back.
- Take a photo of belt routing first.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the engine cover (if equipped)
- Pull straight up on the engine cover to release the rubber grommets (no tools usually needed).
- Set it aside where it won’t get stepped on.
Step 2: Remove the air intake duct (for access)
- Loosen the hose clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
- Disconnect the intake duct and move it out of the way.
- If any plastic clips are holding the duct, release them with a trim clip remover.
Step 3: Release serpentine belt tension
- Insert a serpentine belt tool or breaker bar (3/8" drive) into the belt tensioner.
- Rotate the tensioner to relieve tension, then slide the belt off the alternator pulley.
- Slowly let the tensioner return to its resting position.
- Don’t let the tensioner snap back.
Step 4: Disconnect the alternator electrical connections
- Unplug the alternator field connector by pressing the tab and pulling straight off.
- Remove the protective boot from the alternator main power stud.
- Remove the nut on the main power cable using a 13mm socket, then lift the cable off the stud.
- Torque to 13 N·m (115 in-lbs) when reinstalling the main power nut.
Step 5: Remove the alternator mounting bolts
- Remove the alternator mounting bolts using a 15mm socket and ratchet (3/8").
- Support the alternator with your free hand as the last bolt comes out.
- Torque to 54 N·m (40 ft-lbs) when reinstalling the alternator mounting bolts.
Step 6: Remove the alternator
- Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it free—avoid prying hard on plastic parts.
Step 7: Install the new alternator
- Set the new alternator into position.
- Start the mounting bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Tighten with a 15mm socket, then Torque to 54 N·m (40 ft-lbs) using a torque wrench.
Step 8: Reconnect alternator wiring
- Reconnect the main power cable and install the nut using a 13mm socket, then Torque to 13 N·m (115 in-lbs).
- Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector seal (dielectric grease helps prevent corrosion).
- Plug the field connector back in until it clicks.
- Reinstall the protective boot over the power stud.
Step 9: Reinstall the serpentine belt
- Route the belt according to the under-hood belt diagram (or your photo).
- Rotate the tensioner with the serpentine belt tool or breaker bar (3/8" drive) and slide the belt onto the alternator pulley.
- Visually confirm the belt is seated in every pulley groove.
Step 10: Reinstall the intake duct and engine cover
- Reinstall the intake duct and tighten clamps using a flathead screwdriver.
- Reinstall any clips using a trim clip remover as needed.
- Push the engine cover back onto the grommets.
Step 11: Reconnect the battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal using a 10mm wrench.
- Snug the terminal so it doesn’t rotate by hand.

- Start the engine and confirm the battery/charging warning light is off.
- Listen for belt squeal or slapping; shut off and re-check belt routing if you hear noise.
- With a multimeter, check charging voltage at the battery: typically ~13.5–14.7V at idle.
- If the battery light stays on, check the alternator connector is fully latched and the main power nut is tight.
